Par HERBIET VICTOR. Né à Montréal en 1893, Gilles Amiot grandit au Québec dans une famille aisée. Il entre à l'école dentaire de l'Université Laval de Montréal en 1911 et obtient son diplôme en 1915. Pendant ses années d'université, Gilles participe à de nombreux concours musicaux sur les ondes de la radio canadienne. Bon pianiste et improvisateur, il accompagne par ailleurs les films muets présentés dans un cinéma de Montréal. Entre 1912 et 1916 il compose trois valses pour piano : Dilettante, Mélancolie et Gaby Walz. Il arrête cependant ses prestations musicales en 1918 pour s'enrôler dans le Corps Dentaire de l'armée expéditonnaire canadienne. Il est promu au rang de capitaine et cantonné en Sibérie où il reçoit le commandement du 260e bataillon. Après son retour au Canada en 1919, Gilles Amiot quitte les forces armées pour se remettre à l'exercice de sa profession à Salaberry-de-Valleyfield (Québec). Il continuera à jouer du piano pour divertir ses patients et ses invités jusqu'à son décès en 1970. Dotées d'un charme irrésistible, les ?uvres de Gilles Amiot témoignent de l'importance accordée au lyrisme à l'époque où elles ont été composées. Séduit par ces ?uvre oubliées et influencé par les contraintes de la pandémie mondiale de 2020, j'ai décidé de composer des études de concert pour saxophone solo inspirées des mélodies des valses afin de les partager cent ans plus tard d'une nouvelle façon à un nouvel auditoire.
