Referring to the 1975 blockbuster Jaws, director Steven Spielberg states that John Williams' music “was clearly responsible for half the success of the movie.” This suite features two of the signature musical sequences. In “Out to Sea,” the trio of shark hunters led by police chief Martin Brody (played by Roy Scheider) heads into open water to find the menacing beast. This is followed by the “Shark Cage Fugue,” a classically inspired and sophisticated accompaniment to a tense underwater scene in which Hooper (portrayed by Richard Dreyfuss) comes face-to-face with the great white in an all-too-fragile suspended cage.

Bacchanale, John Cage's first work to exploit his influential prepared piano technique, arose from a request for musical accompaniment by dancer Syvilla Fort. Intending to write her a percussion piece, Cage discovered that the theater in which the premiere was to take place was too small to accommodate any instruments beyond the piano already present, and instead adapted the piano into a palette of percussive sounds by placing small foreign objects among the strings.
A new arrangement by guitarist Aaron Larget-Caplan translates this six-minute work from the prepared piano to an even more novel instrumentation: a duo of prepared guitars, the sound of their vibrating strings transformed by the addition of alligator clips, washers, and slips of paper. This performing score (EP 6784a) includes detailed, illustrated instructions from the arranger on how to prepare the instruments.
The original version of Bacchanale is now available for sale in John Cage's Prepared Piano Music 1940-47, Vol. 1 (EP 67886a). Along with fellow guitarist Adam Levin, Aaron Larget-Caplan gave the world premiere of this arrangement in December 2018 at Arlington Street Church in Boston.

In June of 1980, Aki Takahashi was preparing to leave Buffalo, New York. Morton Feldman, knowing her reputation as a pianist specializing in new music, had invited her to be an artist in residence at the university where he taught. But now it was time for her to go back to Japan. At their last meeting, Feldman gave a musical score to Takahashi as a gift. It was a copy of John Cage's solo piano piece Cheap Imitation with annotations by Feldman. He told her that this was an instrumental version of this piece for flute, piano, and glockenspiel. He signed the title page, just under the original title: INSTRUMENTAL VERSION (Fl, Pf, Glock) Morton Feldman Buffalo, N.Y. Winter 1980Dedicated to Aki Takahashi Four different artists were bound up in this single gesture: John Cage, Erik Satie, Morton Feldman, and Aki Takahashi. The story of this gift, a story of memory and connection, unfolds over most of the 20th century. John Cage was always devoted to the music of Eric Satie. In 1970 Cage was supposed to create a new two-piano transcription of Satie's Socrate for a Cunningham dance, but he was unable to get permission from the publisher. Even worse, he could not even get performance rights to use the published piano-vocal score of Socrate. Cage's creative solution was to make a piano piece that maintained the exact metrical and phrase structure of Satie's Socrate, but with different notes, thus avoiding copyright issues. He called this piece Cheap Imitation. Cunningham responded by calling his dance Second Hand. Feldman arranged Cage's piano version of Cheap Imitation for a trio of flute (doubling on alto flute and piccolo), piano, and glockenspiel. This is the same instrumentation that was used in Feldman's 1978 Why Patterns? and which (somewhat expanded) was the basis for two of his major works in the 1980s: Crippled Symmetry (1983) and For Philip Guston (1984). Feldman made his ar.

Piano Music Arranged for Guitar features five early and mid-career compositions by John Cage, dating from 1933 through 1948, all arranged for solo guitar by Aaron Larget-Caplan. The compositions required little adjustment from the originals, mainly in the form of register modifications, and fit very well on the guitar. All phrase and dynamic markings follow the published originals. Very few left and right hand fingerings are included in the publication to allow the performers their own realizations. All of the works retain their original keys and are presented in chronological order:
Three Easy Pieces (Round, Duo, Infinite Cannon)
A Room
Chess Pieces
Dream
In A Landscape
Cage’s exploration of contrapuntal music and simple forms are found early on in works for two voices and the use of unusual phrases lengths. The later works explore modes, resonance, and begin to show influences of Far East aesthetics in their spaciousness and dealings with time.
The collection is only the second work in the Cage Oeuvre to be published featuring the guitar, the first being Larget-Caplan’s arrangement of ‘Six Melodies’ for violin & guitar issued in 2015.
A recording dedicated to John Cage on guitar will be released in 2018 on Stone Records Limited (UK).

“Over the years my orchestral music has become simpler and more expansive. Clouds of Forgetting, Clouds of Unknowing (1991-95) contains four different musical textures. In the White Silence (1998) has three. For Lou Harrison (2002) reduces this to just two. In Dark Waves (2007), I finally got to one. When I first heard that piece I began to wonder if I could sustain a similar sound for a longer span of time. The result is Become Ocean, a meditation on the vast, deep and mysterious tides of existence. The title is borrowed from a mesostic verse that John Cage wrote in honor of Lou Harrison's birthday. Likening Harrison's music to a river in delta, Cage writes: Listening to it we become ocean. Life on this earth first emerged from the sea. And as the polar ice melts and sea level rises, we humans find ourselves facing the prospect that once again we may quite literally become ocean.†John Luther Adams.
