German composer and pianist Johannes Brahms’ popularity and influence were considerable even during his lifetime. Brahms composed for Piano chamber ensembles symphony orchestra and for Voice and chorus. Avirtuoso pianist he premiered many of his own works. He worked with some of the leading performers of his time including the pianist Clara Schumann and the violinist Joseph Joachim (the three were close friends). Brahms? popular 16 ?Waltzes? opus 39 composed in 1866 for four hands were transcribed by Brahms one year later for two hands. At the request of his publisher Brahms also wrote an easier version of the work for solo piano. Brahms himself described the first version as suitable for 'reasonable hands' that is for proficient players and the easier version as 'perhaps for prettier hands' that is for domestic music-making. He initially described the latter version to his publisher as a 'children?s edition'. The catchy and musically easily accessible pieces are among the composer?s most popular works and are particularly suitable for piano students and lovers of the Romanticrepertoire.Both versions of the ?Waltzes? op. 39 (BA 9602 BA 9603) are available in separate editions and form an important contribution to Bärenreiter?s series of Brahms?s works in scholarly-critical Urtext editions. Brahms’ Hungarian Dances count on brilliant and spirited virtuosity whereas his 16 Waltzes Op. 39 are more modest and intimate. Yet they are just as haunting who isn’t familiar with the gently rockingmelody of no. 14 that is one of Brahms’ best-known musical ideas? His publisher must have had an inkling of the success of this collection as shortly after its publication in its original version for Piano four hands in1866 he asked the composer for a version for Piano solo. Henle are now publishing it in a revised edition based on the musical text of the new Brahms Complete Edition.

Easy Piano Pieces with Practising Tips-With the new Urtext Primo series the Wiener Urtext Edition wants to close the gap arising at the point of transition to additional lessons after having studied a Piano method. Beginning with a performance level which is outlined by pieces such as Bach's Minuet in G (BWV Anh. 116) Mozart's Minuet in F (KV 5) or Schumann's Wilder Reiter (Op. 68/8) works by three different composers are selected for each volume of the Urtext Primo series with the aim of offering Piano pupils (or even adults who want to resume Piano playing) a wide range of repertoire pieces on the basis of which they can enhance their technical and musical skills.
