In a musical style strongly influenced by (and occasionally parodying) American popular music, the subtitle “Baroque” may seem a puzzle at first. It is also the key to Pann’s approach in composing for multiple wind soloists and ensemble. With Bach’s Brandenburgs in the rear-view mirror, Pann has created a glorious hybrid of inspirations with intricate counterpoint, cadenzas, beautiful slow textures, and wild rides, creating a 16-minute, fast-slow-fast concerto grosso. The published piano reduction is fully practical for live performance.My Double Concerto (subtitled “Baroque”) from 2018 posed an immediate challenge which gave me some real trepidation as a composer. The two solo instruments, Clarinet and Alto Saxophone, are quite varied in their timbral characteristics yet they have nearly identical ranges. I gave many hours of thought to solving this challenge and eventually settled on an obvious mission: make each instrument as independent from the other as possible. Explore opposite areas of each range simultaneously. Set very different contours against one another in the solo parts. These kinds of things.I. Bach in the Fifties sets the soloists up as competing crooners. I wanted to write a 1950s-style teen idol tune, complete with electric organ, and writing the music I imagined J.S. Bach might tend towards if he was writing for The Platters or Perry Como. This first movement also presents within it a traditional concerto-style cadenza for both soloists together.II. Desert Arias should transport the listener to an arid, barren land over which a mirage of canons emerge.III. Pronouncements is set in the style of a baroque concerto’s final movement. Nuance is forfeited on behalf of straight-ahead melodic dueling. Stravinsky lingers like a ghost behind this finale.

“Composed by Heinrich Schütz, Psalm 150, SWV 38 is taken from 'Psalmen Davids, Dresden 1619' and is a piece for Double Chorus, Double Brass Choir and Organ. This Baroque Dramatic Concertato is one of the first choral compositions by the author which was initially in German. This religious piece features both German and English lyrics and is also titled 'Praise ye the Lord'. Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672) was a German composer and Organist, often regarded as the greatest composer before J.S. Bach.&rdquo.

Concertino in F for English Horn and OrchestraPreviously known only through a spurious edition in G Major, the authentic Concertino in F was recently discovered in Italy by Pedro Diaz, English Hornist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Diaz prepared this ground-breaking authentic edition through comparison of the multiple historical sources and an intimate knowledge of Donizetti's works. The new edition in F Major is embellished with footnotes regarding sources and ornamentation. The piano reduction and orchestral score and parts (available on rental) were prepared by composer/oboist Mark Biggam in tandem with Diaz's work, and the publication includes extensive historical notes by scholar Michael Finkelman. PEDRO DIAZ joined The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in 2005 and has performed as solo English Hornist in hundreds of productions. As a sought after teacher, Mr. Díaz has lectured extensively at top music conservatories including The Juilliard School, The Manhattan School of Music, The Eastman School of Music,The Hartt Music School, and Duquesne University. His international appearances include masterclasses in Panama, Italy, Mexico, Canada, Puerto Rico, Leipzig, Berlin, and Italy.A native of Puerto Rico, he received his early musical training in the “Escuela Libre de Musica,” an esteemed public school for the performing arts. He has performed as a guest artist with the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, and many other leading ensembles. His playing has been hailed by critics as evocative, eloquent and expressive and is considered one of the pre-eminent players of his generation. Premieres of his works have been featured at events including the International Double Reed Society and John Mack Legacy Camp.Biggam’s choral works have gained recognition, awards, and commissions from organizations including the Moravian Music Foundation, Ohio BoyChoir, and Triad Pride Men’s Chorus. He also has published arrangements and piano reductions of J.S. Bach’s music for Bärenreiter-Verlag. His collaborations with Pedro Díaz include the Donizetti Concertino in F as well as works of the lesser-known composers Pilotti and Mares, recorded by Mr. Diaz and members of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Biggam has alsoprepared arrangements and settings of works for symphonic band, which have been performed by the Piedmont Wind Symphony.
