This little tribute to William Ferris and the William Ferris Chorale consists of two sections, the first slow and the second quick. The text is simply the two words of the title, the Amen being the first section and (with minimal overlap) the Alleluia the second. In each part, the relevant word is gradually built up from its component syllables or sounds, and the second section is a gradual progress from a quiet, light texture to a blazing final cadence. Commissioned by the William Ferris Chorale for their 20th Anniversary Season and first performed by them on 27 March 1992 at Mount Carmel Church, Chicago, Illinois, conducted by William Ferris. / SATB

Amen, Alleluia! is an accessible Latin piece that includes minimal text, making this a wonderful option for young choirs being introduced to Latin texts. The bright, energetic melody is fun to sing with its melismatic characteristics and carefully placed syncopations. A key change lifts the piece into a compelling finish as it recaps the opening themes.

Uses: Good Friday, Holy Week Scripture: Isaiah 53:3; John 1:11; Matthew 26:21-22; John 3:16-17; Galatians 2:20 A moving choral lamentation for the crucified Christ is presented in this anthem for Good Friday. From the shadows of Golgotha, this poignant paean weeps with emotion through expressive music and cries of “Kyrie Eleison.” The anthem is dependent on two soloists that soar above the dramatic choral. The classic chorale “Ah, Holy Jesus” is a sensitive ending to the piece. StudioTrax CD has 3 tracks - Accompaniment, Split, Performance.
