Uses: Benediction Christmas Christmas Eve Scripture: Psalm 4:8 Luke 2:6-7 This traditional evergreen is tenderly re-tooled with a deeper spiritual purpose. The images of evening and night are given multiple meanings in this thoughtful anthem which functions not only as a tender cradle carol for the Christ child but also as a gracious reminder of God's presence and mercy during times when we face the shadows of life. A gentle quote from Joy to the World crowns the piece with a touch of Christmas glory.

To Nocturner (2001) - for Chamber Choir (12 or 24 Voices). Texts by Ole Sarvig and Ib Michael. English version available: KP01444E Programme note: These two choral pieces for 12 voices consists of radical recompositions on of earlier themes: in Summer's Sleep we hear new combinations of two 'Sarvig melodies' from the 1970s (one of which is now in the Danish Hymnbook under the title aret, The Year): Michael's Night is based on an earlier, simple choral song (Star Mirror,1987), now for 12 voices and composed such that an original idea of simultaneously displaced, opposite motions cf. the poem) comes out as desired. Of the Nocturnes Norgard writes: Summer's Sleep wascomposed to stanzas of Ole Sarvig's poem The Year (from the collection Forstadsdigte ('Suburban Poems')) and forms the picture of the summer of life, which is asleep - while the heaven seed waits for the summer wind (invisible to every mind). The many layers of text are expressed musically in a multilayered choral texture with 'looks' up and down through the various tempo and time-worlds: summer sleep, summer dream. The second nocturne, Michael's Night, takes its name from the author Ib Michael, whose poem Star Mirror (from the collection Himmelbegravelse ('Sky Funeral') (1986) I pushed/coaxed him to expand from one to nine stanzas. The four selected stanzas set in the nocturne focus on the pan-erotic elements of the moonlit, starlit night. With the titles I have chosen I have stressed the mythic layer of the text, the summer night not as a dream but as sensual reality. The two nocturnes are dedicated to Ivan Hansen on the occasion of his fiftieth birthday on 25th February 2003, out of gratitude for over a quarter of a century of inspiring collaboration.

The “Hallelujah†chorus is the final movement of part two of Handel’s Messiah, the part that comments on Christ’s crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension. The text of the chorus, assembled from Biblical passages by the oratorio’s librettist, Charles Jennens, is from Revelation 19:6, 11:15, and 19:16: “Hallelujah, for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. The kingdom of this world is become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign for ever and ever. KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.†This edition has been prepared from the first published score in 1767, with comparisons to Handel’s autograph manuscript now housed in the British Museum. The text has been reproduced here without alterations. However, the beamings of the vocal parts have been modernized for ease of reading (the original material has flags instead of beams for every separate syllable). The piano accompaniment is a reduction of the orchestral material: the first and second violin parts are represented in the upper staff, with only occasional inclusion of the viola, trumpet, and timpani parts, the basso continuo, in its original form, is in the bottom staff. The GIA Historical Music Series edited by Dennis Shrock, presents repertoire suitable for performance by public school, college and university, church, and community ensembles, with the purpose of making available to today’s conductors lesser-known and previously difficult-to-procure historical masterpieces. The music, drawn from the Renaissance through the Romantic eras, is in performance editions based on the most current and rigorous scholarly research. The musical scores reflect original intent of notation, with all editorial markings and emendations clearly identified as such. In addition, preface material accompanying the music contains literal translations of foreign language texts and information regarding the lives of the composers, genres, and relevant performance practices. Dennis Shrock is Director of Choral Activities at Texas Christian University. He has been called one of the top choral scholars in the United States and has received a number of awards for his work. He received a bachelor's degree in music education from Westminster Choir College and both master's and doctoral degrees in choral conducting from Indiana University.

This sweet setting is an adaptation of the As with Gladness Men of Old text about those who followed the star. Concise vocal ranges, sensible phrasing, and a naturally flowing poetic meter make for manageable preparation during the busiest time of year. Ruth's ability to construct a lyrical melody, memorable piano motives, and logical voice parts shines clearly through. Several satisfying suspensions and a momentary tonal shift provide a warm harmonic backdrop. Be sure to observe the expressive dynamic and tempo markings to shape the most musical performance. A lovely selection for both concert and worship.

Based on Bassani’s 1962 novel, THE GARDEN OF THE FINZI-CONTINIS dramatizes the true story of a prosperous Jewish family’s disruptions and consequences from state-mandated antisemitism in Italy during World War II. Gordon describes the opera as “romantic, sun-drenched, and cataclysmic, all at the same time.” This dramatically topical and personal grand opera premiered at New York City Opera and National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene to rave reviews in 2022. Chris Ruel wrote in OperaWire, “I have chosen Ricky Ian Gordon and Michael Korie’s THE GARDEN OF THE FINZI-CONTINIS as my favorite opera of 2022.”.At one point, in 2008, I was walking down 72nd Street, and I passed the video store, (this is when there were video stores) and I thought to myself, I wonder if Kevin (my partner) has ever seen The Garden of the Finzi-Continis? which was always one of my favorite movies. My reaction when we watched it that night was unlike any other time I had seen it. I was wrenched, sobbing, inconsolable. My heart felt like the autumn leaves we see blowing through the garden at the end of the movie. It seemed immediately that this had to be my next opera. I called Michael Korie, and we both bought the Bassani novel and read it. We settled on it. It felt clear that we both had a collective story to tell through it.Because this opera is so close to both of our hearts, it is dedicated to our fathers. It is not only that The Garden of the Finzi-Continis is a Holocaust story that makes it so resonant for me, though obviously this is no small matter, but the tragedy of people trying to live their lives, or actually living them, their petty disappointments, their heartbreaks, against the backdrop of total catastrophe… that makes it so moving. They cannot possibly imagine what will befall them, but we know… and this makes their every move fascinating and devastating… like watching moths under a glass. It is romantic, sun-drenched and cataclysmic, all at the same time. This is why I had to write it.

Zibuokle Martinaityte tells about the background of Aletheia (2022) for mixed choir (SSSSAAAATTTTBBBB):“Aletheia is variously translated from Greek as 'unconcealedness', 'revealing' or 'unclosedness'. It is uncovering of the Truth - the one we are afraid to face, the truth that can only be expressed directly through the pre-verbal communication. How do you find words for the horrors of the war, for all unimaginable global atrocities? How do you even allow yourself to feel it out? Solely through art, through music that offer a safe space and a formalized framework for processing these accumulated complex emotions and sharing them with others in a moment. This piece has no verbal text and it is based on various combinations of vowels and consonants, thus connecting us on a deeper level through the immediate emotional experience. The work is commissioned by the Lithuanian National Radio (LRT Klasika) The war in Ukraine in spring of 2022 had an impact on all of us and shattered my deeply rooted Lithuanian identity. When the freedomis threatened and innocent people are dying, it is hard to make sense out of the reality.Yet there is poetry even in the worst nightmares. I was imagining that the only instrument people have even in situations of destruction, in the midst of the war, is their VOICE. It brought back memories of my youth when 'Singing revolution' was taking place in the Baltic countries. Human voice was the only weapon that people used to express their determination for freedom and independence. Voice is our first and the very last instrument we have in our lifetime. Thinking in these terms brings almost a sacred dimension to the voice as an expression of the life itself - from the very first baby's scream until the last breath and whisper.†Duration c. 15' The works of New York -based Lithuanian composer Zibuokle Martinaityte (b. 1973) have been lauded as breathtaking and profoundly moving. Her stimulating music bristles with energy and tension and revolves often around the subject of beauty, which she calls botha guiding principle and an aesthetic measure for sonic quality.

“Being such a prolific composer, particularly for Vocal and Piano works, Gabriel Fauré's music is always addressed with high expectations. His Les Djinns for SATB choir and Piano is no exception. Fauré (1845-1924) began receiving high quality musical instruction from age 10 at the Niedermeyer School. He eventually became a piano pupil of Camille Saint-Saëns. Fauré's career saw him succeed Théodore Dubois as organist at the Church of Madeleine in Paris and become professor of composition at the Paris Conservatoire, all the while composing sublime works. Les Djinns was written towards the beginning of the composer's career and is based on the poem of the same name by Victor Hugo. The poem depicts the sounds of the night. Each stanza becomes gradually longer as the text climaxes, and shortens again with the anticlimax, creating an arch form. Fauré mimics this in his music through use of structure, dynamics and the texture of the Piano accompaniment. With Fauré's music remaining hugely popular to this day, Les Djinns is a favourite for the choral repertoire.&rdquo.
