I wrote this sonnet almost 20 years ago, during a
holiday in Morocco. I had the idea to put it to music,
friends (who this piece is dedicated to), having told
me that they were going to Essaouira soon ...
LYRICS O bleue Essaouira, d'arganiers entourée,
Tes routes vallonnées aux chèvres acrobates,
Dromadaires altiers, vertes bananeraies,
Puis vers Imassouane, une route escarpée
Qu'auraient pu célébrer les plus belles Sourates,
L'huile d'argan vendue au grand chaud sans épate,
Et même en plein midi, par de jeunes marchands,
Attisent ma mémoire à ton soleil ardent.
Tes nobles artisans, dedans la Médina,
Présentent aux chalands meubles et bibelots
Travaillés, marquetés en loupe de thuya.
Par ton souk animée, ô bleue Essaouira,
Par tes bijoux d'argent et tes tapis-tableaux,
Tu vaincs en beauté ta jumelle Saint-Malo.
