1. Sing praise to God Who reigns above,
The God of all creation,
The God of pow’r, the God of love,
The God of our salvation;
With healing balm my soul He fills,
And ev’ry faithless murmur stills:
To God all praise and glory!
2. What God’s almighty pow’r hath made
His gracious mercy keepeth,
By morning glow or evening shade
His watchful eye ne’er sleepeth;
Within the kingdom of His might,
Lo! all is just and all is right:
To God all praise and glory!
3. The Lord is never far away,
But, thru all grief distressing,
An ever-present help and stay,
Our peace and joy and blessing;
As with a mother’s tender hand
He leads His own, His chosen band:
To God all praise and glory!
4. Thus all my toilsome way along
I sing aloud Thy praises,
That men may hear the grateful song
My voice unwearied raises;
Be joyful in the Lord, my heart!
Both soul and body bear your part:
To God all praise and glory!

Wonderful Grace of Jesus is
one of my favorite hymns. To
God Be the Glory is another
one. At an early age, I
remember memorizing its place
in Great Hymns of the
Faith—#449. Every time that
this was one of the ones we
were to sing on Sunday, I’d
be thrilled—and to this day,
I still am.
It’s partly because To God
Be the Glory has such a great
tune—William H. Doane was a
great composer. However,
Fanny Crosby’s words in it
provide a thought I’ve
always tried to live by—in
arranging hymns, writing or
performing music, as well as
any other area of life.
God’s the ultimate Creator
of us all, and any talent we
have, we have because He so
chose to bestow it upon us.
He created us in His
image—therefore, we are to
reflect His greatness in
whatever we do in life.
It’s only appropriate, then,
that we should give Him the
glory for the “great things
He hath done” for us.
Yet this hymn is about so much
more than just the mere
talents God has given us.
It’s about the greatest act
God ever performed for
us—the act of sending His
own Son, Jesus, to die on the
cross and save us from our
sins. “So loved He the
world that He gave us His Son,
Who yielded His life an
atonement for Sin.” Christ
needed to atone for sin
because we couldn’t. We had
no way of paying the price for
our sin, and for that, we were
doomed to spiritual
death—eternal separation
from God, in a place of misery
called Hell. Enter in Jesus,
Who lived a perfect, sinless
life, something no human could
ever live. Because of that,
He could pay the price for our
sin by dying. It’s not
something He had to do—not
something He would have done
naturally, being God—it’s
something he chose to do
because He loved us. “O
perfect redemption, the
purchase of blood! To ev’ry
believer the promise of God;
The vilest offender who truly
believes, That moment from
Jesus a pardon receives.”
Yes, Christ made the payment
for our sin, but by making the
payment, he now set the
conditions. Salvation’s a
gift, after all, and the giver
gets to decide how he’s
going to give it. Christ set
a condition, but it’s an
easy one—one which anyone
can fulfill. “Believe on
the Lord Jesus Christ, and
thou shalt be saved!”
It’s so easy to do, it’s a
wonder why so many
refuse—why so many reject
God, why so many outright hate
him! The reason is that they
are blinded to salvation by
their own sin. They don’t
want to admit that they’re
sinners, which is what every
believer has to admit in
realizing that Jesus is their
only way to Heaven. Yet this
unwillingness to admit is
stupid! You don’t change
the fact that you’re a
sinner by not admitting it,
and God already knows it! He
knows it, but He loves you!
He doesn’t want to hold it
against you. If you’ll only
place your faith in Jesus,
He’ll all too happily accept
Christ’s sacrifice as
substitution for your
punishment and one day accept
you into Heaven. It’s that
easy.
That’s the message of this
hymn, and that’s why it’s
my favorite.
