A long time ago I bought an old hymnal for 50 cents at
a secondhand book fair. It was a 19th century Anglican
hymnal. Occasionally I open it at random and use the
hymn as a starting point. They are not arrangements of
the hymn but simply a jumping off point. This piano
sonata does that for each movement. However, in the
first movement there are fragments from Handel's "See
the Conquering Hero Comes!"
