Another delightfully exuberant and melodious kolenda
(Christmas carol) arranged for SATB choir and piano (or
organ) with English translation. Again, the translation
is as accurate as I can make it while still echoing the
stanza form of the original. It seems customary these
days for Polish choirs to sing only the first two
stanzas of the original five. While these clearly fit
the melody’s joyful nature, I have included a third
(originally stanza 4), because it strikes me that the

is as accurate as I can make it while still echoing the
stanza form of the original. It seems customary these
days for Polish choirs to sing only the first two
stanzas of the original five. While these clearly fit
the melody’s joyful nature, I have included a third
(originally stanza 4), because it strikes me that the
opening ascending quaver figure probably alludes to the
’hastening shepherds’ of that stanza (as in the
kolenda ’Shepherds Came to Bethlehem’). Once again,
I hope that this translation and arrangement will
enable this carol to become wider known to
English-speaking choirs and audiences.
