This is a powerful arrangement when you tell the story behind the songs. It was at the height of the American Civil War that Longfellow penned the words to ?I Heard the Bells of Christmas Day.? The third verse captured the contrast between the message of ?peace on earth? and the violence of the war. To some it appeared that God was dead, or at least uninterested in the affairs of men.
