The Sonata da Chiesa (church sonatas) are intended to
be used as preludes to a Mass or Religious Service, but
can be performed
as independent pieces at a concert. Most have been
written for instruments in C, the accompanying
instrument is generally organ but other keyboard
instruments may be used. When played on the organ
registration and (in some instances) use of the pedal
organ is left to the discretion of the organist.
