The representation of the donkey and the ox in the
manger of Bethlehem probably owes its origin to the
prophet Isaiah, who accuses the people of Israel not to
recognize his God while the ox and the ass know their
master: The ox knows his owner and the ass his master's
crib, Israel does not know, my people do not understand
(Is 1, 3).
