Evening Waterfall comes from a cycle of eleven a cappella choral pieces derived from Early Moon, a collection of poetry by Carl Sandburg. The images in these simple, direct lyrics have a depth and resonance that all but cry outfor musical expression. Evening Waterfall is one of the easiest, certainly the most diatonic, of the Early Moon pieces. Imagine yourself, or perhaps, your childhood self, sitting in a tree or lying on the grass in the gloaming ofa summer's evening. The sounds of birds, the feel of wind on your skin, the sight of early stars: all seem to conspire to give you a name...to call you by your real name. But such knowledge--a kind of certainty about one's selfand place--is ephemeral. It cannot be willed to appear, or to stay. We are left alone, wondering what was the name you called me? and why did you go so soon?

â??Tonigh t I Dance Aloneâ? for double choir a cappella consists of three poignant episodes from the life of an old man. We encounter him before his wedding, before celebrating his wedding anniversary and now as an elderly widower who says to his grandson:â??Soon we will dance in the God-light, My love and I. Soon will the moon be ours again, And the endless shining stars In the halls of heaven. Soon, my love, very soon; But tonight, one last time, Tonight I dance alone.â?The libretto and the descriptive music are deeply moving and constitute an ideal partnership. This is MÃ¥rten Jansson's first collaboration with the well-known librettist Charles Anthony Silvestri. The piece provides a well-worth challenge for ambitious choirs. It was world-premiered by the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus under the baton of Philip Barnes on 1 October 2017 in Saint Louis, MO (USA)The performance can be viewed on YouTube

Eja Mater is a prayer for comfort to all parents who have lost their own child, but also expresses love from parents to their children. Originally written for choir and orchestra as part of Kim André Arnesen’s Stabat Mater, this stand-alone version, adapted for a cappella choir, has a symphonic feel. This heartfelt and ethereal setting has a persistent flow throughout, with melodic lines effortlessly passing between voices. Breath marks and rests are carefully notated for this reason, and this also enables the piece to be sung by only eight voices, though it is equally appropriate for larger choirs accustomed to singing in eight parts.

Do not neglect is a stand-alone movement from Kim André Arnesen's large-scale work, The Stranger, which uses a thought-provoking text from chapter 13 of the Epistle to the Hebrews: “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.â€. The text is short, but really worth reflecting on what it means to us, and it is this internal reflection that is portrayed in this beautiful, solemn and largely homophonic setting. This setting is written for choir and cello, one of the composer's favourite combinations, but it may also be performed a cappella. The extracted cello part is included in the vocal score.
