Par FAURE GABRIEL. This volume of 'oeuvres complètes de Gabriel Fauré” contains Fauré's four secular choral works in their orchestral arrangements, namely 'Les Djinns”, 'La Naissance de Vénus”, 'Madrigal”, and 'Pavane”. These works were composed between 1876 and 1887 - thereafter Fauré wrote choral compositions based only on sacred texts. The first three works are presented here for the first time in a full score edition, previously having been published only in their versions with piano accompaniment. This edition is therefore the first to present the works with an authoritative musical text based on the careful study of the sources. 'Les Djinns” (1876-76) for mixed choir and orchestra is based on the famous poem by Victor Hugo first published in the collection 'Les Orientales”, while 'La Naissance de Vénus” (1882) for soloists, choir and orchestra is based on a text by Paul Collin. 'Madrigal”, the orchestral version of which cannot be dated with certainty (around 1891, for a quartet of soloists or choir) has been composed after a poem by Armand Silvestre, and the famous 'Pavane”, originally composed for orchestra and only later supplemented with a text by Symbolist poet Robert de Montesquiou, is presented here in an elegant, graceful version with mixed choir. / Date parution : 2019-06-20/ Répertoire / Chant et Orchestre

This publication presents under one cover various short works for sundry orchestral scorings. Larghetto for Orchestra is MacMillan's orchestration (2017) of his celebrated Miserere for a cappella mixed choir (2009), a setting in Latin of Psalm 51, 'Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy great mercy', the penitential text famously set in the 17th century by Gregorio Allegri. The Larghetto orchestration was commissioned by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in celebration of Manfred Honeck's 10th Anniversary as Music Director. Memoire imperiale is one of a number of variations on General John Reids march tune Old Gaul commissioned from Scottish composers to mark the centenary in 1994 of the Faculty of Music at Edinburgh University. The Faculty was established following a bequest by General Reid (1721-1807), a former law student at the University and a renowned flute player and composer of marches for the BritishArmy, and he asked that an annual concert be organised at which one or more of his compositions be played. Composed in 2012 for the Britten Sinfonia, One is a monody in which a single line is passed around the instruments, painting it with different colours as it emerges and develops. Lasting only a few minutes, its singularity is maintained until blossoming in the lastfew bars. For Sonny (2011, orch 2013) and Ein Lamplein verlosch (2018, orch 2019) are short, private memorial tributes originally for string quartet and here rescored for string orchestra. Hirta was composed in 2016 as part of Deccas The Lost Songs of St Kilda project. Nearly a century ago, the last 36 residents were evacuated from the most remote part of the British Isles, St Kilda, an isolated archipelago off the beautiful and rugged western coast of Scotland. After 86 years, the music of St Kilda was rediscovered, recorded in a Scottish care home by Trevor Morrison, an elderly man who had been taught piano by an inhabitant of St Kilda. The songs were 'reimagined' for the Decca album by various.

The Leipziger Ausgabe der Werke von Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy pursues the goal of making accessible to the public in an adequately scholarly form all of Mendelssohn's accessible compositions, letters and writings, along with all other documents of his artistic oeuvre. A considerable number of Mendelssohn's works are still waiting to be published; many others have been published in an unsatisfactory manner.Though the new Mendelssohn Complete Edition follows the ten volumes of the Leipziger Mendelssohn Ausgabe (LMA) published by the Deutscher Verlag fur Musik (DVfM) in Leipzig since 1961, it sees itself as a fundamentally new conception which reflects the present-day standard of scholarly editions. The first volumes of the new Complete Edition were presented in Leipzig on 3 November 1997 at Mendelssohn Festtage in Leipzig.SON 411 - 413 have been awarded the German Music Edition Prize 2006.Editorial Board: Christian Martin Schmidt (chairman), Peter Ward Jones, Friedhelm Krummacher, R. The year 1828 was a Durer Year (300th anniversary of death), and the Berlin Durer Festival was looking for a suitable composer to write the festival cantata. The renowned Carl Friedrich Zelter turned down the offer and recommended his pupil instead, the 18-year-old Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. He accepted, and, within a few weeks, the Festmusik MWV D1, was finished, his first full-scored sacred vocal work. Mendelssohns Festmusik subsequently fell into oblivion despite its much-applauded world premiere. The specific context and the rather wooden libretto most likely proved too prohibitive even though the young composer had given his best. This can now be confirmed for the first time by consulting the new printed edition.

Elijah - Early Versions document a decade that ranges from the first conceptional ideas of 1837, hence directly after the completion of St. Paul, to the world premiere of Elijah on 26 August 1846. Mendelssohn had already worked out the plan for a libretto with his friend Carl Klingemann in 1837. Shortly thereafter, Klingemann sent a text which the composer then passed on to his friend, the theologian Julius Schubring. Then began a breathtaking logistical marathon in which Mendelssohn, during the final phase, raced to prepare the world premiere in Birmingham from Leipzig, while simultaneously taking the elaboration of the libretto increasingly into his own hands; indeed, he was, as usual, still changing, deleting, and even adding entirely new numbers at the rehearsals - with the result that the performance was ultimately only an essay, a pre-world premiere of the great work which he was later to subject to several more revisions.Awarded the German Music Edition Prize 2023.
