The first impulse to compose these 3 Little Suites for Guitar came from the desire to offer very young students compositions not framed by the usual features of â??music for childrenâ?? but, rather, meant to introduce into their musical horizon sonorities, rhythms, and expressive modalities not generally experienced in the more â??traditionalâ?? courses of study. As the compositions developed, the project underwent some slight modifications, so that in the end one could say that the three suites became progressively more difficult, though remaining, in their deep essence, quite â??simpleâ??.I would recommend paying careful attention to the titles of the pieces and to the expressive markings. Although it was not my intention to write â??descriptiveâ?? music, I have tried to handle these pieces like stage scripts, giving each a specific â??characterâ??. For this purpose my long experience as a composer of theatre music has been very helpful. It would give me great satisfaction if guitarists of every age would enjoy performing these suites. I would like teachers to find in them cues for proposing to their pupils further refinements concerning both technique and expression, never forgetting how inexpressible music truly is.(Carlo de Nonno).

This facsimile of an original by Michel Pignolet de Monteclair is part of our French classical music collection. Edition : Paris, C. Ballard, 1697. Preface by the Early music department of the CNSMDP, class of Irene Ginger and Jean Saint-Arroman: dance and music - composition and instrumentation - notation - time signatures - terminology - continuo. Three separate instrumental parts: premier dessus, second dessus, continuo bass. The precise instrumentation is usually mentioned. According to Monteclair these pieces are suitable for dancing. They are written either for a melody instrument and bass or a trio. The simple, clear writing makes them ideal dance music. Handel†s Concerto in F major (HWV 331) was long considered a variant of two movements from the three suites of his “Water Music†(HWV 348-350). Recently our understanding of the “Water Music†had to be thoroughly revised owing to new scholarly discoveries. Not only did the structure of the three suites prove to be unhistorical, but Friedrich Chrysander’s 19th-century view turned out to be correct: the two “variants†actually constitute an independent concerto. In musical terms, HWV 331 is related to two movements of the “Water Music†and is frequently performed alongside them. Now it is available for the first time in a performing edition based on the already revised volume of the “Halle Handel Editionâ€, which reflects the current state of scholarship concerning the complex source tradition of the “Water Music†and the Concerto HWV 331.

The most important and only autograph source of the French Suites, the Klavierbüchlein für Anna Magdalena Bach (1722) contains the first three suites in fragments only, and the sixth not at all. This is why the numerous copies which have come down to us, are of special significance. Among the copies of major importance is the manuscript which for a long time had been attributed to Bach, and which comprises the first for suites in full (Deutsche Staastsbibliothek, Berlin) as well as the copy by Gerber (1725-26) and the second volume of the Klavierbüchlein (1925). A few manuscripts originating from the circle of Bach's pupils should also be added to them. The texts of thevarious copies show a lot of deviations. The present edition relies on the first formulation - at least where this can be decided at all - but it gives all the major devations of the copies as variants, either in footnotes or after the movement concerned. Shee les has a distinct gift for melody and for developing musical motives intensively and inventively, while always treating the keyboard in a highly varied and idiomatic manner. Each of his thirteen suites, all containing between three and five movements, follows an individual plan, mixing lengthy and sometimes ambitious movements with shorter, simpler ones. This is their first modern edition, and one that promises to win his music many admirers.
