Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) was a Danish musician, often seen as his country's greatest composer, who now occupies a distinguished platform in the national and cultural heritage of his native land. The Carl Nielsen Edition is an independent project which aims to publish all of his finished works, in the version last approved by the composer. The Quartet for Strings in G minor (Op. 13) is the earliest of Nielsen's four published quartets, having been composed in 1887-1888, but it was not published for over a decade. It comprises four movements: Allegro Energico - Andante Amoroso - Scherzo. Allegro Molto - Finale. Allegro (Inquieto) .

Richard Reed Parry 's Quartet For Heart And Breath is an innovative and original piece based on the performers' own bodily rhythms. This sheet music is for String Quartet (Violin/Violin/Viola/Cell o). Richard Reed Parry is familiarto millions as the lead singer of rock band Arcade Fire, yet his foray into classical music is equally worthy of attention. Quartet For Heart And Breath is an experiment into using the performers' heartbeats and breathing to dictate the tempo. The performers are instructed to wear stethoscopes in order to listen to their heartbeats closely, while one complete breath corresponds to one bar and two heartbeats equal two crotchets. The result is a quiet and subtle piece, as each instrument has to play softly so as to be able to keep in time. The piece also has a naturally occurring dynamism in that the players' heart rates constantly change as the performance goes on, with each instrument falling in and out of sync sometimes culminating in a beautiful moment of all heartbeats matching each other. Interestingly, this unique aspect means that no performance will ever be the same, meaning to hear or play this composition will be a truly once in a lifetime experience. Quartet For Heart And Breath is a superbly one-of-a-kind composition by Richard Reed Parry . Commissioned by the Kronos Quartet, this piece makes for a wonderfully distinctive performance, with fascinating implications for the connection between the music and the body.

Lotta Wennäkoski's Pige (2021-2022) for string quartet was commissioned to be paired with the Death and the Maiden quartet by Franz Schubert (pige is Danish for girl). The composer tells:The first movement Vorüber, ach, vorüber! is based on the first half of Schubert’s lied lying behind his The Death and the Maiden quartet. The maiden’s song in the beginning of the lied has not found its way to his string quartet, so I wanted to use this material in mine. The second move-ment Daktylus borrows its idea from the haunting pulse of Schubert’s chant of Death. Something fierce and something soundless can be heard here - along with other variants on the dactyl rhythm. For example, I’ve written a lyrically flowing melody based on the same rhythmic pattern (long-short-short).Schubert’s quartet is wonderful music and of course a cornerstone of the repertoire, and the death and the maiden is a strong, tempting and gloomy motif in art history. On the other hand, I just couldn’t help seeing the motif also as a - somewhat passé - image of an old male desiring the ulti-mately young female body. The third movement thus turns its gaze to the girl herself. Pigen og scrapbogen, The Girl and the Scrapbook, is joyful textural music - compiled of fragments and freely handled quotations that might spring to mind when thinking of a vital girl’s life.This product includes the full score and the set of parts.Movements:< br>1. Tiina Myllärinen's (b. 1979) (Bad) Dreams come true for strings quartet (2022) was composed when war broke out in Europe. The composer tells: The shock, and the daily news barrage of battles could not help making an impression on my work and its material. I wondered what dreams and plans people had in Ukraine before the war, and how everything became a nightmare in a single night. Terror, fear and tension found their way into the work, along with memories of life in the past and dreams of a different future. The work is dedicated to the people of Ukraine; to the dreams that will hopefully soon come true.This product includes the full score and a set of parts.Tiina Myllärinen’s music has been described as cheerfully inquisitive, vigorous and original. Her works include Squarcio for ensemble, the orchestral what? Richard Ayres' Three Small Pieces for String Quartet each have distinct characters that illustrate the composer's vivid imagination and skill for combining energetic, touching and sometimes wild music. The first piece is a short tribute to the Romanian singer Maria Tanase, a long forgotten performer who was once a star in her country. The second is a rough, fast and folk-like section in 11/16 time and the third, subtitled 'Countess Eva von Spendu (on a horse) gallops through the forest (pausing four times to contemplate natural splendour)', contains (in the words of the composer) 'hunting gallops, a Feldmanesque 19 bar blues, some devilish fiddling, moments of repose and contemplation, and a lyrical finale.'.
