This collection of jazz ensemble arrangements is made up of direct transcriptions of big band recordings by Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington. Arranger Jeff Hest has meticulously transcribed these jazz standards (with the original instrumentation of each famous band) and has included transcriptions of the improvised solos. Jazz Conception is a new and exciting way for players at all levels to learn the language of jazz! Each book/CD set features 21 solo etudes based on chord changes to standards and blues.
The same 21 etudes transposed and adapted for the main jazz instruments.
See and hear how a well known soloist phrases and articulates and play along with or without the soloist on the CD.
Play along with one of todays finest, swinging New York rhythm sections: Mike LeDonne on piano, Dennis Irwin on bass, and Kenny Washington on drums.
Start out fairly easy, then get progressively more difficult.
Use the etudes as a bridge to solos of the masters that are usually more complicated and involved.
Learn melodies and lines that will give you a solid jazz vocabulary and musicality.
Use the book/CD sets for private lessons, for self-study, or in any combination up to a full jazz ensemble, including flute and clarinet.
If you are more advanced you may want to use the book to develop your sight reading abilities, for transcribing the etudes off the CD (then check against the book) or for just having fun playing along with a great jazz rhythm section.

Jim Snidero
Originally from Washington D.C., Jim Snidero arrived in New York in 1981, after attending the University of North Texas, and has established himself as a distinguished soloist and recording artist. He has recorded as a leader for Toshiba/EMI, Criss Cross, Double-Time and Red Records, receiving four stars from Down Beat. Jim has been a member of Toshiko Akyioshi´s Jazz Orchestra since 1983, performed and recorded with Frank Sinatra, Jack McDuff, Eddie Palmieri, and Frank Wess, among others, and is a frequent member of the Mingus Big Band. Snidero is an instructor at the Mannes School of Music in New York City and has given jazz workshops throughout the U.S., Europe, and Japan. Jim is also a Selmer clinician.

After the break-up of the big-band era around 1950 many of the finest 'swing' or mainstream players found themselves without an outlet for their abilities and took to playing 'Dixieland' in New York clubs such as Eddie Condon's and the Metropole. And so was born a new style of Dixieland jazz minus the banjos tubas steamboats and magnolias! It is this version we celebrate on this album. We encourage you the soloist to invent counter-melodies rather than mere harmony parts. This is a music of loose weavingparts not one of precision ensemble figures.
