Liszt composed the Romance oubliee around 1844 for Piano. It was forgotten until he heard Violist Hermann Ritter at the first performance of Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen at Bayreuth. He fashioned for Ritter a transcription of the work for Viola and Piano as well as ones for the Piano, Violin and Violoncello.In this short work, the listener hears the agonies of a troubled soul, beginning with a rhapsodic passage, continuing with a cadenza-like section, then a section with arpeggiated figures, finally settling into a peaceful ending.This 4 minute work is appropriate for advanced performers. With Mr. Sauer's arrangement we now have this lovely version for Tuba or Bass Trombone and Piano.

First published and recorded in 1954 (only included at the time on the album "A Leroy Anderson Pops' Concert"), this lovely piano instrumental was released as a UK single in 1957 and hit the charts in early summer. Decca then issued the track on 45 in the U.S. which enjoyed a moderate success. Anderson later recorded stereo version of Forgotten Dreams in 1959. The composition features a haunting, romantic melody and its performance is within the reach of most late-intermediate pianists. Written in D major, it contains expressive tempo variations, an animated B section, and arpeggiated chords which require a bit of stretching. Friction, Pressure, Impact comprises three movements, each of which focuses on the question of musical metabolism in a different way. The first movement, Friction, has a moderately fast metabolism, working through the musical material between the instruments with some speed yet with a kind of compulsively controlled rate of evolution. Pressure has a much slower pace of working through its musical argument, which is relatively minimal. It moves heavily and sensuously through its course. Impact changes and shifts with a mercurial speed; although this movement has one single argument throughout, it is an argument that is constantly changing shape and perspective: phrase-lengths, local patterns, registers, and harmonic inversions are constantly in flux, pelting the music's surface like a hale storm.- Hannah Lash.
