From the pen of Lauren Bernofsky comes a truly unique contribution to the trombone repertoire – music expressing the joys and challenges of parenthood, through a mother’s eyes. FROM A MOTHER’S JOURNAL is a suite of five movements, Love Letter, A World of Worry, Bedtime Battle, Contentment, and Little Imp, which bubble with warmth, irony, frustration, tenderness, humor … as complex a cocktail of emotions as parenthood itself. The music explores a broad range of trombone techniques, making the 10-minute suite an exciting tour de force for any recital. The idea for FROM A MOTHER’S JOURNAL originated during car ride from an IWBC conference back to New York City – Nikki Abissi and I were sharing our experiences of the challenges and joys of motherhood, and she said, “Wouldn’t it be cool to have a trombone piece written about all the emotions of motherhood?†There certainly wasn’t one that I knew about! Not long after, she contacted me about writing her exactly that piece.I thought that this was definitely a concept for a piece whose time had come, and I was immediately on board with the project. She sent me some short descriptions of some of her experiences, from the frustration of getting a rambunctious baby to go to sleep at bedtime to the boundless love she felt for not just her baby but her husband, as a father, as well. I wrote each anecdote into a short movement, and the result was a collection of musical vignettes covering a range of moods and textures as well as trombone techniques. Since I, too, am a mother, I filtered her anecdotes through my own lens, and I consider this piece to be not just a biography of Nikki but also my own autobiography.

Tarkiainen writes: The Lustful Mother's Heart is a solo work that plumbs the depths of one of the most fundamental human instincts - the tie between a mother and her new-born child that, as day follows day, becomes less part of its mother's body. The work develops themes from my song cycle The Lustful Mother in which long solo viola passages strike to the very heart of down-to-earth, natural womanhood. The Lustful Mother's Heart was born at a very special moment in my life when my second child was spending his first weeks in this world. The viola song kept company with us night and day, dark and deep-rooted, at times broadening out into a hymn, weaving into our fate as through a dream. The Lustful Mother's Heart is dedicated to violist Ellen Nisbeth, who also commissioned it.

With a text based on the work of Christian mystic Julian of Norwich, this provocative work for organ and four-part choir compares God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit to a wise, loving, and merciful mother. Within the text is also a gentle prayer that our faith be firmly rooted and encouraged to grow and flourish. The organ accompaniment of this resolute hymn fully supports and moves with the vocal parts.

A mother's love is boundless, never-ending, gentle, and caressing. Written upon the passing of the composer's mother, this composition opens with a pure and simple melodic statement that later opens into the warmth of the full ensemble sound, much like the comfort of a mother's embrace. The opening interval of the minor third is often heard by a child calling mom-my, and the piece closes with the bells playing this motive. The composer dedicates this piece to the memory of his mother, who always believed in his hopes and dreams.

A song cycle for baritone voice, string quartet, and piano. The composer writes: Naarasaiti (The Lustful Mother) is about becoming a mother, an experience in which sexuality combines in a natural way with the birth of a new life. The texts of the cycle are from the collections of poems Aiteja, tyttaria (Arbeeadni, The Time of the Lustful Mother, 2013) and Kylma kumppani (Galbma radna, My Cold Companion, 1999) by two contemporary Sami poets, Rauni Magga Lukkari and Rose-Marie Huuva. The poems' primitive, matriarchal beat is present throughout in the music: a dark, earthy solo viola accompanies the baritone while the sizzling, sparkling strings erupt at times in powerful textures..
