Balakirev's own success as a composer was intermittent largely owing to eccentricites of character and a tendency to make enemies through his own overwhelming enthusiasm and intolerance of other ideas. Balakirev's Sonata in B Flat Minor for Piano is an expressive and virtuosic piece with some beautifully gentle and lyrical moments.
