Like many Englishmen I had sung madrigals for pleasure - usually late at night with friends, after several glasses of wine. While these madrigals have their charm, and many are extremely beautiful, I found, as I began an extended exploration of the madrigal as a creative venture, that the richest source lies in the Italian Renaissance.In 1998 I embarked on a project to write a series of madrigals, eventually deciding to collect them in 'books' in the manner of Italian madrigalists, such as Monteverdi or Gesualdo. The Second Book is for an unusual six-part group - the Scandinavian Trio Mediaeval (3 sopranos) and three tenors (John Potter plus two from the Hilliard Ensemble) - and sets Petrarch in the original 14th century Italian. I focused on those sonnets known as the Rima Sparsi (scattered verses) and added one extra Petrarch setting - originally a radiophonic piece (Marconi's Madrigal) for CBC's Marconi Day. Gavin Bryars.

Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen 's Four Madrigals From The Natural World for 6-12 part mixed chorus. This piece incorporates texts by Les Murray. ' FOUR MADRIGALS to texts by the Australian poet Les Murray are composed of two songs (Bats' Ultrasound and The Octave of Elephants) written for the Australian vocal group THE SONG COMPANY, and two songs (Cattle Egret and Comete) from my larger work SOUND / SIGHT, written for the Danish Radio Chamber Choir, but here arranged for six voices. The texts are pictures and situations from - or meditations over - THE NATURAL WORLD. Les Murray's way of approaching this world is not in the least sentimentalor nostalgic: the poems reveal a truebeing-out-there realism: so basically the approach is realistic, but the creating of form elevates the material to an abstractplay, a daring and exuberant poetic language. These poems asked to be set to music. I gave up old idiosyncrasies regarding descriptive music, and surrendered to the madrigal, with its special so-called madrigalisms, which entails also animal-imitations. Than ks to a stipend from his patron, the Landgrave Moritz von Hessen-Kassel, Schutz was able to pursue a three-year period of study under Giovanni Gabrieli in Venice from 1609 to 1612, which he concluded with the publication in 1611 of the madrigal collection Il Primo Libro de Madrigali. The idea behind this work was to create an opening piece, something to start a concert in an unusual way. The title is a portmanteau word derived from madrigal. The work indeed begins in Renaissance mood however gradually tries to shake of its modal start and, by contrasting different instrumental families,the work changes into modern clothes.Why not add a little Renaissance splendor to any concert with this unique new work?

De titel Madrigalum is afgeleid van de term madrigaal - en dit openingswerk begint inderdaad in een renaissancistische sfeer, aanvankelijk met slagwerk. Een fanfareachtig motief, ingezet door een solotrompet, is gebaseerd ophet ritmische motief dat de aanvang van veel zestiende-eeuwse madrigalen kenmerkt (een lange toon en twee korte tonen). Maar het werk schudt zijn modale start van zich af: met contrasten tussen verschillende instrumentgroepen veranderthet van richting en hult zich in een modern jasje. Een legato gedeelte vestigt de aandacht op de zachter klinkende instrumenten in afwisseling met het madrigaalritme - tot een complete omschakeling naar een sneller coda leidt,waarmee het werk besluit.

Dem Titel entsprechend, beginnt dieses Eröffnungswerk im Renaissance-Stil in den Schlaginstrumenten mit einer fanfareartigen Figur in einer Solotrompete. Dann entwickelt sich die Musik jedoch hin zu moderneren Klängen. Dann wechselt sich ein Legato mit dem schnelleren Madrigalrhythmus ab, bevor das Stück noch einmal die Richtung ändert und in einer schnellen Coda endet. Ein ungewöhnlicher, viel versprechender Auftakt für Ihr Konzert!

Questo brano di apertura è insolito e originale. Il titolo è un acronimo derivato dal termine madrigale, una forma musicale apparsa nel XVI secolo. Madrigalum apre al suono delle percussioni, in uno stile rinascimentale. La tromba espone un motivo di fanfara ispirato da una figura ritmica caratteristica di numerosi madrigali dell’epoca. La struttura abbandona progressivamente la sua forma modale per sviluppare un dialogo strumentale contrastante e contrastato che d al brano una forma più moderna. Un passaggio legato evidenzia gli strumenti dalle sonorit più calde e si alterna con motivi ritmici del madrigale, prima di imporre un cambiamento assoluto del carattere cheaccompagna il brano ad un finale eclatante.
