Description Original pieces as well as new arrangements for upper voices of some of the most popular titles from John Tavener's outstandingly varied and extensive list of works for choir. Over the years, we can trace a line from the exquisite simplicity of his setting of Blake's The Lamb to the monumental Veil Of The Temple . The arrangements are all for soprano and alto singers, with a varying number of parts, up to four sopranos and four altos (in Ikon Of Saint Hilda ). An Organ or Piano accompaniment part is provided as applicable, with an additional optional Cello solo in Song For Athene . John Tavener 's Coplas , composed in 1970, for unaccompanied SATB Choir. ' Coplas is a short anthem for voices and tape. It belongs to a much larger work called 'Last Rites' which I have been thinking about for about a year. It is based on the mystical idea of St. John of the Cross which obsesses me - the more I live the more I must die. Hence the deliberately static nature of Coplas. In once sense Coplas is a prolonged decoration of the 'et sepultus est' cadence from the Crucifixus in Bach's Mass in B minor. In another sense I think of it not so much as my music but a way of listening to Bach's music. ' - John Tavener.

The world premiere of A New Commandment , a piece by the late Sir John Tavener specially commissioned for Summer Fields, was in February 2014 at the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford. This work was possibly one of his very last commissions before his sudden and untimely death in November 2013. COMPOSER'S NOTE I have set these words from St John's Gospel many times, because I feel them to be among the most profound and therefore key texts in the Christian faith. This setting falls into three sections with an ABA structure. A New Commandment is dedicated to my mother-in-law Mary, but it is also an unspoken tribute to the Spanish master Victoria who has inspired methroughout my life..

This commission was supported by the Ministry of Education and Culture in Iceland and is dedicated to Hilmar Orn Agnarsson and The South Iceland Chamber Choir. The Three Shakespeare Sonnets was one of the first works that Tavener composed after serious illness in 2007. He wanted to pay tribute to his wife, Maryanna, who nursed him back to some degree of health, so he turned to the Shakespeare Sonnets and was delighted to find that they brought forth music once again, after having been silent for so long.
