Playford's The Dancing Master is the classic compendium of English country dance tunes. First published in 1651 it went through eighteen editions in almost 80 years. In its day it was the most popular collection of its kind and engendered numerous imitations. The tunes selected by Playford and his successors were taken from many sources and demonstrate the extraordinary richness and vitality of popular melody in England during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. This book brings together for the first time under one cover 535 tunes and their variants from the eighteen original editions. It provides a fund of musical material for performers whether folk musicians orbaroque instrumentalists and for class and instrumental music teachers. It is also an invaluable reference book for anyone interested in the history of English music.

The music Herbert Howells has tended to be unjustly neglected but his post-war output of orchestral and chamber works is currently enjoying a period of re-eveluation. This Herbert Howells society edition of six pieces brings to light yet another aspect of his work, namely his Piano music. Even though he was an accomplished pianist himself, music for Piano did not figure highly in his output. This volume contains some charming character pieces in the form of six Sarum Sketches, two slow dances based on tunes from John Playford's The Dancing Master, an extrovert piece based on a folk tune, a minuet composed as a birthday present for John Ireland, a brief vignette and an exquisite miniature. Of the six pieces in this volume, three appear in print for the first time.

Adapted from a dance tune of the 1600s, this is a lively tune and very dance-like. The melody is light-hearted and carefree. As with any dance music, maintaining the rhythmic vigor is crucial. Gaiety and a sense of fun is the very nature of this piece, so have fun!

English country dancing has been popular for over 300 years, and The Dancing Master features two delightful folk tunes in that timeless style arranged by Andrew H. Dabczynski. The first lively tune, Jamaica, has been used in the theme to the British TV comedy, Upstart Crow, and the second, The Goddesses, offers a charming contrast. Attributed to John Playford, these melodies fall under the fingers of beginning string students with interesting, rhythmic parts for all players. An optional hand-drum part adds to the upbeat 17th century dance atmosphere. (2:10).

The Fair Maid of Wickham. Le finale expose les sémillants We Are All Right at Canterbury et Ramsgate Pier.
