Belg ian composer Jef Joseph Maes (1905 – 1996) often described himself as a modern romantic, and his 1948 Arabesque and Scherzo for flute and piano (written as a concours piece for the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp in Belgium) is a testament to that label. Quite aside from its appeal to flutists as a competition work - with its origins as a concours piece allowing the player to display both technical and musical prowess - the music itself holds touches of Korngold and early Hindemith in its lush melodies and moments of sultry film music. And, though Maes held no truck with most elements of modernism, his clever take on neo-romantic harmony and a healthy touch of humor keeps the piece sounding fresh and appealing. Constructed on the model of more famous Paris Conservatoire pieces - Gaubert's Nocturne et Allegro Scherzando, for example, or Enesco's Cantabile et Presto - the Arabesque and Scherzo revels in the two-movement format. The opening Arabesque allows the flutist to sing, with ornamentation and figurations highlighting the flute's ability to color octave-spanning melody with technique. The Scherzo alternates between action sequences and moments of reverie, but always with an ear towards vivid musicality and clear conversation between flute and piano.

Symphony no. 6 dates from the spring of 2009. It is dedicated to the conductor Károly Neumayer and his orchestra, the Pécs Railway Workers' Concert Wind Ensemble. About the work, the composer writes: 'This three-movement composition follows the classical traditions, but the first movement further develops the Scriabin-type sonata form, combining two fast movements. In contrast to the lyricism of the second movement a subterranean, negative force also makes its presence felt but in a dramatic conflict is overcome by the massive, inspired communal singing of the lyrical material, which becomes chorale-like as it emanates from the modal scales. The third movement is acheerful, dance-like scherzo, with comical, humorous sound-effects ' Die 6.

Sandra Dackow Little Known Gem - Grade V. Preludium, Andante espressivo, Scherzo, March. Written in a retro, Swedish neo-Classical style, the four-movement Serenade for Strings offers easily hummed tunes presented with grace and good humor. The Preludium offers inner rhythm of nearly consistent sixteenth note figures including written divisi in thirds. Many beautiful lines for cello and viola are found in the Andante Espressivo, which also has a few high passages for violin, reaching high G’s and A’s. The Scherzo is the most technically challenging movement, with quickly shifting tonalities and high, rapid passages that must be kept at the frog and off the string. Finally, the March, reminiscent of toy soldiers or a music box, contains several tricky passages and high notes for the first violins. This charming piece is popular with students!!
