Haydn 's works often contained musical jokes, and the Surprise Symphony (#94) includes the most famous of all -- a sudden loud chord in the theme of the second movement after a tranquil opening. The music then returns to its original quiet dynamic, as if nothing had happened, and the ensuing variations do not repeat the joke. As the story goes, this surprise was meant to wake up anyone in the audience who had started to doze off. This version gives students with a great opportunity to listen for pitch accuracy on their F and C naturals. Duration 2:50.

The twelve “London Symphonies” comprise the sublime final statement of Haydn's symphonic oeuvre. They were written for the London impresario Johann Peter Salomon, and Haydn himself conducted their premieres during his lengthy stays in the English metropolis in 1791/92 and 1794/95. To this day, the G-major symphony, first performed in March 1792, numbers among Haydn's most popular works. It owes its English nickname “Surprise” to the striking tutti chords in the Andante, which apparently caught the audience off guard. Haydn had consciously incorporated this effect at a later stage - and was thus subsequently also perfectly willing to authorize this nickname that had been dreamt up by a London musician. This popular work also spread rapidly through German-speaking countries, where it is still firmly established in the repertoire as the “symphony with the drumbeat.” This study edition adopts the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, thereby guaranteeing the highest scholarly quality. An informative preface and a brief Critical Report make the handy score an ideal companion for all current and soon-to-be Haydn fans.

Hayd n’s Symphony No.94 was first performed on 23 March 1792 at the Hanover Square Rooms under the direction of Salomon as concertmaster with the composer himself at the fortepiano. The work was an instant success and soon became – and remains – one of Haydn’s most popular symphonies. The soubriquet Surprise was attached to the work very early on, and was prompted by the unexpected forte chord (reinforced by the Timpani stroke) in bar 16 of the Andante. In German-speaking countries the symphony is known by the nickname Mit dem Paukenschlag for the same reason.

The series 'Get to Know Composers' presents works of famous masters in easy arrangements as well as original compositions for piano. A brief biographical sketch with contemporary colour illustrations as well as a list of the most important works provide easy access to the respective composer. Thus, amateur pianists and young piano pupils can embark on a vivid excursion into the life and work of important composers.Apart from Mozart and Beethoven, Haydn was the oldest of the three representatives of the Viennese Classicism. The genres of symphony, string quartet and oratorio were perfected by Haydn in a way which is regarded as 'classical' today. Apart from Haydn's original piano works, these three genres are among the main topics in this volume which contains excerpts from 'Farewell Symphony', 'Surprise Symphony', the symphony 'The Clock', 'Emperor Quartet' as well as the oratorios 'The Creation' and 'The Seasons', among others.
