L'enjeu initial de cette oeuvre composée en juin 2006 était de réunir deux problématiques sur lesquelles je travaille depuis mes toutes premières oeuvres : la démultiplication de l'espace et la notion de concerto. Sensible en général à tout ce qui peut générer le conflit, mais voulant sortir de la dialectique soliste-orchestre que j'ai beaucoup développée, j'ai pensé opposer un double-soliste à deux ensembles relativement similaires (comme dans Eclair de lune composé en 2006 où ce sont trois caisses-claires qui occupent trois espaces scéniques différents face à trois petits groupes instrumentaux, ou comme dans le Concerto pour deux altos de 2007). Ici, les deux pianos fonctionnent à la fois dans une logique de relais (et de confrontation spatiale) et d'amplification (un des deux instruments modifiant le timbre de l'autre par la doublure de certaines notes). Le début de la composition de l'oeuvre a été particulièrement difficile pour moi, tant il existait alors un hiatus fondamental entre l'aspect ludique et spectaculaire des confrontations multiples entre solistes et ensembles ou entre groupes scéniquement différentiés, et ma volonté d'écrire une oeuvre intériorisée, condensée. Si la formation initiale pouvait me fournir beaucoup de matériau luxuriant, le travail sur l'élaboration d'une dramaturgie unitaire souffrait du côté rhapsodique induit par le genre-même du double-concerto. Rapidement confronté à l'impossibilité de synthétiser ces deux aspects (fantaisie du matériau, directionalité de la forme) dans un seul et même parcours, je m'apprêtais à remettre en question radicalement le projet lorsque, le 12 juin 2006, est survenue la mort de György Ligeti. Cette disparition m'a évidemment bouleversé, et alors que je repensais aux oeuvres de ce compositeur, je constatais qu'il avait été notamment maître dans l'art de résoudre la problématique qui était alors la mienne. J'ai donc pensé à une dramaturgie qui prendrait comme point de départ des traits de piano fulgurants, des relais rapides, des chocs d'énergies contradictoires, mais qui s'éloignerait progressivement de ces gestes initiaux pour donner naissance à des textures d'attente, plus continues, voire plus statiques. C'est ce parcours qui a déterminé le titre de cette oeuvre, évidemment dédiée à la mémoire de György Ligeti, qui a été commandée par la WDR et par la Sacem, et créée au festival de Witten le 22 avril 2007 par l'ensemble Modern dirigé par Lucas Vis.
