Full Orchestra - Digital Download SKU: A0.1008426 Composed by Camille Saint-Saens. Arranged by Arkady Leytush. Romantic Period. Score and parts. 85 pages. Arkady Leytush #6621571. Published by Arkady Leytush (A0.1008426). When I discovered this composition of Saint-Saens written for 2 pianos, I was struck by his amazing penetration into the Polish spirit and ability to express it in bright and rich colors. On the other hand however, I could not get rid of the feeling of some heaviness and excessive density of the sound of the piano duet. In addition, the character of this music and its development are permeated with symphonic techniques inherent in orchestral compositions. These circumstances pushed me to undertake the orchestration of this work, which on the symphonic stage would have received great fame and legitimate public recognition.

Brass Quintet Bass Trombone,Horn,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1472617 Composed by Bill Conti. Arranged by Mary Clark. Classical,Film/TV. 11 pages. Second Wind Music #1050268. Published by Second Wind Music (A0.1472617). “Philadelphia Morning” is a powerfully expressive composition that sets the tone for a scene early in the movie Rocky when the main character has just found out the he will get to fight the world champion boxer and sets out for a training run in the gritty city streets of Philadelphia at 4 a.m. on a dark, cold, dreary winter day. (click here to see a clip of this scene from the movie) This beautifully written piece is penetrating and pensive in describing the battle within, the solitude of it, the impossibility at hand, and generally, the struggle involved in pushing oneself. There is a powerful but subtle orchestration here; the sound of a kind of musical undertow — an undertow that is pulling our hero down, as if giving him leaden legs, or of running in quicksand. But there is also a twinkle of possibility. At the end, the [music] trails off and there is uncertainty in the air.” [From: Jack Doyle, “Philadelphia Morning: 1976-1977,” PopHistoryDig.com, March 25, 2015.]This brass quintet arrangement of Philadelphia Morning would work well as a short concert piece that showcases the expressive qualities of the French horn as well as that of the whole ensemble. This piece has a quiet, pensive, somewhat moody tempermanent. While this arrangement is not technically challenging (other than the range for the horn part noted below), the lean scoring and soft dynamics requires the ensemble to pay close attention to balance and play as one in style, tone quality, and expressiveness. Phrases passing from one player to another need to flow as if being played on a piano. The expressive opening eight-bar horn solo, which is a direct transcription from the movie score, is mostly unaccompanied and ranges up to a high b-flat so a strong, confident horn player is needed – but they will surely enjoy playing this elegantly written passage. (The film soundtrack recording features Vincent DeRosa on horn.) The bass trombone part can be played on a tuba.

Flute,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549636 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Concert,Instructional,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 16 pages. Jmsgu3 #3516309. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549636). Duration: ca 5:20, Score: 8 pages, solo part: 3 pages, piano part: 4 pages. One of Beethoven's finest and most famous works. Program for a recital, church meditation or school program. Sonata Pathétique Op. 13 First of all, this is an arrangement of the second movement of Beethoven’s Sonata Pathétique. It seems like Beethoven wrote this piece before becoming troubled by deafness. Published in 1799, it consequently remains one of the most celebrated pieces Beethoven ever wrote. As a result of its popularity, the movement was therefore performed by Karl Haas. Hass recorded it for a popular radio show called: Adventures in Good Music. Beethoven Background Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 –1827) was certainly a German pianist. Above all, he was probably one of the greatest composers in history. As a result, he is a pivotal character in the progress between the Classical and Romantic periods. He is certainly one of the most famous and hence important of all composers. Seems like his most familiar and noteworthy works include symphonies 1-9; piano concertos 1-5; and furthermore, the violin concerto. Also, certainly of extreme importance are the noteworthy 32 sonatas for the piano; the string quartets 1-16; the Missa solemnis; and likewise, his only opera, Fidelio. Beethoven Overview First of all, Beethoven was born and consequently raised in Bonn. Upon turning 21 he moved to Vienna probably to study composition with Haydn. That’s when he consequently grew a reputation as a brilliant pianist. Furthermore, he probably stayed in Vienna for the rest of his life. In his late 20s, it seems like his hearing certainly began to decline. It slowly declined until consequently, he was nearly totally deaf probably by the last decade of his life. As a result, he stopped conducting and performing. Nevertheless, he continued to compose. As a result, some of his greatest works probably come from this period. First Period Seems like we often divide Beethoven’s life into three periods. Period 1 begins with Beethoven’s arrival in Vienna. Hence, during this period, he mastered the Viennese style of Haydn & Mozart. He consequently began increasing the size and scale of his works. Furthermore, he experimented with extreme dynamics, and likewise extreme tempi. He worked similarly with chromatic harmony. His First and Second Symphonies, therefore, belong to this period. Other important works also belong here: the first six string quartets and the Sonata Pathétique, Op. 13. Second Period His second period probably began as soon as he realized that he was going deaf. During this period, it seems like he became obsessed with the idea of heroism. His works consequently become even larger and more massive. The most noteworthy of these include the symphonies 3 – 8, piano concertos 5& 6, 5 string quartets, several important piano sonatas (Waldstein and Appassionata), the Kreutzer violin sonata, the violin concerto and his only opera: Fidelio. Third Period In contrast, Beethoven's third period is branded above all by works of incredible intellectual depth, formal innovation, and penetrating expression. It seems like he continued to expand his works. Consequently, the string quartet Op. 131 spills over into seven connected movements. Likewise, in the Ninth Symphony, he adds choral forces to his orchestra probably for the first time in history. Even more, other works from this period include his Missa solemnis, the final 5 string quartets (including the enormous Große Fuge) and the final five sonatas for piano.

Published by Sylvia Miles (A0.1118650). I can't resist U A Fanthorpe's Christmas poems, written each year to send out to friends, now published by Enitharmon Press. This poem hooked me on the first reading - like the birds, it just ASKS to sing! Try to capture the swooping of the swallow, the brashness of the wren, the melody of the blackbird - and then, the soundless yet penetrating quality of the owl's verse.

Even more, other works from this period include his Missa solemnis, the final 5 string quartets (including the enormous Große Fuge) and the final five sonatas for piano. www.jamesguthrie.com.

Score and parts. 52 pages. Jmsgu3 #3557749. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549863). Beethoven Sonata Op. 49 No. 2 arranged for string orchestra. Duration: 10:15 Score: 28 pages, 242 measures. In two movements. I arranged this for my own beginner orchestra. Easy to rehearse and perform. Very popular with the audience. Sonata Op. 49 No. 2 Arranged from Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 20, this is a simple but interesting work in two movements showing the composers sense of humor. The first movement Allegro ma non troppo and the second movement Tempo di Menuetto are both in the key of G. Both Sonatas 19 and 20 (op. 49, No. 1 & 2) are named Easy Sonatas because they are technically easier than the usual Beethoven Sonatas. This makes them very popular among students and teachers alike. Richard C Ramey #4610387. Published by Richard C Ramey (A0.984620). This is a musical interpretation of a Norwegian poem by the same name. The poem is spoken by someone who senses that life is drawing to a close and that the spring before him is bound to be the last. . Grieg’s inherent gift of pure and simple lyricism is evident in Våren from start to finish, and through his exquisite and unsentimental restraint he conveys a sense of deep longing with plainspoken and penetrating beauty. A wonderful work for bassoon quartet.

Daniel Carr #30875. Published by Daniel Carr (A0.918711). The Three Nocturnes are highly impressionistic in nature, they depict three progressing times of night: dusk, midnight and dawn. The first movement contains a harp-like piano accompaniment over which the flute sings – generally light and free. Near the end, as midnight approaches, the music grows darker in character. The second movement has a concentrated, quiet intensity -- more whisper than scream. It is primitive and trance-like. The flute plays without vibrato – sounding almost like an ancient wooden flute. The third and final movement depicts dawn as the sun bursts upon the horizon, shining on the flowers and trees that had been hidden by darkness of night. It is a joyful and dancing movement, with a capricious middle section suggesting children chasing fireflies through a dense forest which the sun has not yet penetrated. Both the first and third Nocturnes make extensive use of the highest register of the flute.
