The Dreamers - A Gothic Tale for Horn Trio by Niels Marthinsen. Programme note: The Dreamers for horn violin and piano is the sixth of a series of seven compositions named after Karen Blixen's collection of short stories Seven Gothic Tales. My musical gothic tales are written for very different ensembles - THE SUPPER AT ELSINORE is a saxophone quartet THE OLD CHEVALIER is for bass trombone and piano THE MONKEY is a chamber orchestra work - but they all share musical material in a criss-cross of contextual references reminiscent of Blixen's narrative complexity: Themes and motivs from one pieceappear in others in new and surprising shapes and combinations. Karen Blixen's THE DREAMERS has the most complex narrative structure of all her seven gothic tales. The story is made up of three tales with different narrators but with the same principal caracter in various disguises all three imbedded within a fourth tale that serves as a framework for the entire short story.The main story line unravels the life of a famous opera diva who looses her voice during a terrible fire. Before this her life was perpetual bliss and the tragedy drives her into assuming different personality guises in order to escape reality.Toward the end she is confronted with her true identity and dies.THE DREAMERS isn't 'about' anything. The music is inspired by the artistic content of Blixen's short story - it's emotionalism dramatic construction atmosphere period and settings - but unfolds in time and musical space in ways that are completely independent of the story's narrative progression...except one might say that the three players try their best to either catch or escape each other and that when they finally meet it happens abruptly even tragically - and only barely provides a little consolation.

Originally written for Guitar and Chamber Orchestra this three-part lyrical concerto is a series of free variations on an original troubadour style melody.

Dramaphonia for Piano solo and Chamber Ensemble was composed by Poul Ruders in 1987. First part of 'Drama Trilogy'. Commissioned by and dedicated to Poul Rosenbaum and Lontano. Programme note: 'Dramaphonia' for Piano solo and 11 instruments forms the first part of a trilogy of solo-concertos the remaining two being one for percussion and smaller symphony orchestra ('Monodrama') and the last ('Polydrama') for violoncello and full orchestra. All three pieces are in one movement each and may be performed together thus presenting a vast 'concerto grosso' of the duration of ninety minutes. Each concerto however standsby itself offering its own story: having employed the word 'drama' in all three pieces I naturally want to imply that something is 'going on' a series of hidden events created by each listener’s own 'inner theatre' which enables him to stage his own personal associations and in the case of 'Dramaphonia' the compositorical tension alters between action and frozen panoramas. In the percussion concerto the rhythmical progression is being constantly intensified whereas the metric proportions of Dramaphonia tighten and loosen like a magnifying glass being wielded in and out of focus. The latest volume of the popular series extends the repertoire of beginner and intermediate cello students with excellent transcriptions of works by music historys three great Bs. Árpád Pejtsik, the editor of the series, has transcribed for three cellos the Trio Sonata in G Major for Flute, Violin and Continuo by Bach, a witty bagatelle by Beethoven and two works originally written for the piano (Sarabande, Gavotte) by Brahms in his youth. While at least intermediate instrumental skills are required due to the use of higher positions when playing the top parts, the bottom parts can be performed by beginner cellists. Interpretation is helped by the fingering and bowing being provided by the editor. / 3 Violoncelles

First performance 12 October 2011 at St George's Hall Liverpool by David Pyatt (horn) and the Sacconi String Quartet as part of the Centenary Concert of the Rodewald Concert Series.Composer's NoteThroughout my musical life I have found the horn one of the most evocative and beautiful of all instruments and it is no surprise that I have written a number of works for it including a concerto a trio with violin and piano and a triptych of concert works for horn and piano. Writing a work for horn and string quartet has long been an ambition therefore fuelled not only by my love of the instrument but also by theastonishingly small repertoire of horn quintets.This work was commissioned to celebrate their centenary by the Rodewald Concert Society Liverpool who gave me an invaluable education in the masterpieces of the chamber music repertoire at their concerts which I attended regularly during my schooldays. The quintet is dedicated to Nancy and Douglas Brady two of my oldest and closest friends from Liverpool. It was written in 2010/11 and is continuous. There are however three main ?movements?: an opening quick one which is interrupted twice by brief slow interludes referring to the motto heard at the start a substantial slow movement which also contains two short scherzando sections (much as Brahms?s A major Violin Sonata has two quick trio sections in its slow movement) and a fast finale a descendant of the Beethoven one-in-a-bar scherzo.The scherzando interludes interwoven with the slow movement are frequently muted and have something of an other-worldly atmosphere perhaps Queen Mab came to deliver me of some dreams while I was writing it. At the end of the finale the furious activity gives way to an elegiac conclusion which I feel was greatly influenced by events in the world outside at the time of composition the music descending to a quiet sustained C on horn and cello. Cheryl Frances-Hoad's Cloud Movements for Clarinet Violin and Piano. Cloud Movements was premiered by Ensemble Matisse on the 8th January 2015 at the Purcell Room (South Bank) as part of the Park Lane Young Artists New Year Series. 'On honeymoon in Tuscany I was determined to come home inspired by a great work of art on which to base my next commission. However it was watching the gradually changing shape of a cloud crossing the sky over a glass of Tuscan Red that eventually inspired this work: the idea influences the harmonic progressions in the piece which gradually metamorphose in shape following no particular rules. Backhome I started reading Naomi Klein's This Changes Everything about Climate Change and Capitalism. A chapter about 'Solar Radiation Management' a potentially hazardous proposed geoengineering practice in which sulfates are sprayed into the stratosphere (with the intention of reflecting sunlight back into space) influenced the piece as it progressed (in particular the final movement). The second and fourth movements are both canons - the first a three part canon the second a four part palindromic one (palindromes also feature in the final movement).' - Cheryl Frances-Hoad
