Cello Concerto In G Major Op. 42

für Violoncello und Klavier-Julius Klengel (1859-1933) was a German cellist most famous for his etudes and solo pieces written for the instrument - he ultimately composed hundreds of pieces for the Cello including four Violoncello concertos two double Cello concertos Cello quartets a Cello sonata as well as numerous caprices etudes and other technical pieces. Unfortunately the majority of his compositions for Cello are rarely remembered however this piece stands out for its value to developing cellists – it is a wonderful brief introduction to the concerto form. The diverse three movements of the Concertino in C Major give the student pleasure whilst onlyinvolving the 6th and 7th positions at the higher register (but no thumb positions). With a total performance time of approximately 20 minutes this concerto is perfect for intermediate to advanced cellists (Grade 6-8).

Elgar's last major work was the cello concerto, and it is unique in its poignancy and intensity. Through Jacqueline Du Pre's overwhelming interpretation, this work has now received the recognition it deserved and it will undoubtedly remain one of the best-loved concertos of all time. Haydn’s Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra in C major (Hob. VIIb:1) was probably composed between 1762 and 1765 when he was already director of music to Prince Esterh zy. It may have been writtenfor the cellist in the court Orchestra Joseph Weigl (1740-1820) for whom Haydn most likely also wrote the solo Cello parts in his early symphonies. Weigl was a member of the Esterh zy ensemble from 1761 to 1769 andthereafter served as a principle cellist in various Viennese ensembles.The concerto was rediscovered by Oldrich Pulkert who in 1961 found an eighteenth-century manuscript copy (Prag National Museum Fonds Radenin) andpublished the concerto in 1962. Previously the existence of this piece was known only through Haydn’s entry in his private list of works (the so-called ‘Entwurf’ [‘draft’] catalogue).The Orchestral setting ismodest: besides the Strings (with a non-obligato Bassoon doubling the Bass part) there are two Oboes and two Horns which are reserved almost exclusively for the tutti passages.This Piano reduction is based on the text givenin the complete edition of Haydn’s works as edited by the Joseph Haydn Institute Cologne (Joseph Haydn Werke Series III Vol.2 with Preface and Critical Report published by G. Henle Verlag Munich 1981). The Cello partin the Piano reduction is identical to that of the complete edition and thus follows the Prague source as closely as possible even in the expression marks and in certain peculiarities of notation.

Boccherini's style spread throughout Europe and his Cello Concerto in D G.479 became the model for W.A. Mozart's Violin Concerto in D K.218 (1775).Boccherini's Concerto In D For Cello And String Orchestra is a beautiful piece and this is an arrangement for Cello with Piano Reduction. The solo cello part is also included on a separate insert.

Haydn composed the C Major Cello Concerto between 1762 and 1765 almost certainly for cellist Joseph Weigl of the Esterházy Orchestra. The complete autograph score has never been found but orchestral parts were discovered in 1961 in the Prague National Museum.
