For unaccompanied French horn-These studies are designed to explore beyond the present limits of Horn technique and are meant to form a contemporary extension to the older studies of Kopprasch Gallay Maxime-Aphonse etc. They are therefore written to be very challenging - each Etude concentrates on an immediately identifiable problem of technique and presents it at an almost virtuoso level. This should not put the book 'out of reach' - it is clearly set out and good players can start to become excellent players by practicing these Studies perhaps just a passage at a time at first hence this book's difficulty rating. The complete pieces should then become a standard part of the advanced player'spractice. Although French (F) Horn is stipulated a further challenge is provided by transposing studies once they have been learned!

Composed by Maxime Alphonse (Jean Marie Maximin François Alphonse known as Griet 1880-1930)  Two Hundred New Melodic And Gradual Studies is the fifth book of a set of six containing 200 études for Horn with different levels of difficulty. The level of this fifth book is rated as very difficult and contains 20 studies. As a Horn teacher who had also won the Premier Prix in Horn at the Paris Conservatoire Maxime Alphonse wrote this set progressively to ensure that the content was matching the needs for quality studies starting with pieces for beginners and evolving through the books to thosefor advance students. Even though little information can be found about the composer this set of six books is essential to play contemporary Horn and is widely used in the USA and in Italy.

The First Book of Practical Studies is designed to develop chord consciousness and to provide additional experience in the fundamental rhythms key signatures and articulations and to improve accuracy in reading through the use of interesting and melodic studies. It may be used either to supplement or to follow any beginning method book and will serve as an ideal preparation for slightly more advanced techniques to be found in the Second Book.

French composer music teacher and Horn player Jacques-François Gallay (1795-1864) studied at the Paris Conservatoire. His series ?Célèbres Etudes Pour Le Cor remains widely used to this day. Legato Etudes for Frech Horn, based on the vocalises of Guiuseppe Concone, is addressed to three specific problems faced by the French horn performer: interpretation of the legato phrase, extension of the low range, and familiarity with the bass (F) clef. Key signatures, time signatures, and dynamic markings have received careful consideration in relation to these problems.

The arrangements are completely compatible with each other and can be played together or as solos. Each book contains a carefully edited part that is appropriate for the Level 2-3 player. The arrangements in the string instrument books, however, are not compatible with those in the wind instrument books due to level considerations regarding keys and instrument ranges.
