The piece was written in honour of Pierre Boulez's 75th birthday. Besides the title, put together like a mosaic from three Pierre Boulez pieces entitled Dialogue de l'ombre double, Structures, and Pli selon pli, the homage-character of the piece is also indicated by the Reihe used as a base, originating from the composition entitled Structures. The passage-titles of the form made up of seven sections and the character of the musical material of the individual sections all point to pieces by Boulez though they do not contain a single actual quotation from them. The piece is a one-movement chamber concert in which two emphatically polyphonous clarinet parts play a leading role alongside a string quintet. During concert performances, it is an essential element of the piece that the musicians playing the clarinet parts constantly change their position. While the strings remain at the centre of the stage throughout, the two clarinet players, starting out from the left and right side of the stage, finally meet behind them (in the fourth section), then slowly begin to move off stage, one to the left, one to the right. (Tunde Szitha) The performance material can be hired under the catalogue number S-99BMC CD 073Klenyan Csaba, Szabo Balint, Componensemble, cond. Serei Zsolt.

Prayer is a short work written in honor of Paul Fromm's seventy-fifth birthday as part of a bouquet of compositions especially composed for the occasion and presented in a concert commemorating the event on January 22, 1982, by the Contemporary Chamber Players of the University of Chicago, Ralph Shapey, music director. My notes for that evening read: I asked myself--how shall I celebrate this special day? The answer--compose a prayer. A wordless one... the horn is my voice. Bass clarinet, bassoon, and timpani form a low choir supporting, commenting, punctuating. From their midst the clarinet takes flight. In my mind, it assumes the role of the innocent village boy whose whistle, according to an old Jewish tale, opened the gates of heaven.  .

The depth and inventiveness of Amanda Harberg’s SUITE FOR WIND QUINTET can only be described as remarkable. Harberg combines the rich tradition of renaissance and baroque dance suites with her own American voice, stirring up dramatic, exciting sounds and stories. Cantus uses the imitative entries of renaissance motets as a jumping off point into a more contemporary world. The playfully virtuosic Furlana refers to the Italian folk dance rhythm in 6, punctuated by lots of unexpected 5’s. Fantasia hints at being a lullaby with an animated and jazz-influenced middle section, and the closing Cabaletta is true to its 19th-century meaning of a rousing closing section following beautiful lyricism. SUITE FOR WIND QUINTET was commissioned and premiered by the Dorian Wind Quintet.Amanda Harberg’s Suite for Wind Quintet was commissioned by the Dorian Wind Quintet in 2017. The piece was the result of a conversation in a bar between Harberg, Dorian’s flutist Gretchen Pusch and Pusch’s husband Richard Bayles, on the occasion of Dorian’s clarinetist Ben Fingland’s 40th birthday party. A year and a half later, the Dorian Wind Quintet gave the world premiere of Harberg’s quintet at Bargemusic, and has incorporated it into their repertoire ever since. Suite for Wind Quintet is in four movements- 1. Cantus, 2. Furlana, 3. Fantasia and 4. Cabaletta. The melodic material heard in the very opening of the piece can be heard recurring and transforming throughout the four movements, until it unites triumphantly in the final coda with the theme of the concluding movement. The piece was inspired by the concept of placing Renaissance and Baroque-inspired dance suites into Harberg’s idiom as a 21st century composer.

The seventh wind quartet was completed in 2002 and is fashioned after a childhood memory of a chaotic and impromptu music experience. I remembered a children’s birthday party where several sisters, who had taken music lessons, were pushing each other off a piano bench in order to have a brief turn playing easy tunes. This artless ruckus turned out to be an exciting 'performance' despite being unplanned. The girls were laughing, pushing, shoving, struggling, even banging and pounding, while managing to render chopped-up tune fragments from pieces that were popular at the time. The result is a single-movement quartet, where surrealism is based on non-surrealistic reality. For advanced performers. Duration: 9'15.
