Here at last is a performer!s edition of the first three Bach cello Suites. Notated by scholar Tim Hugh, the volume contains BWV 1007, Suite one, BWV 1008, Suite two, and BWV 1009, Suite three. With all of the movements repeated (minuets, bourrees and gavottes twice), the editor prefers to give as much variety as possible between them with regards to bowing, dynamics, tempo and mood. A helpful CD of all three Suites is included in this must have volume!

The latest volume in the Leggiero series is a selection from Telemann?s enormous ?uvre, featuring movements that can be performed as independent pieces. Included among the generally fast dances taken from the suites (or ouvertures) are several slow movements from concertos or concerti grossi, so that the volume provides really varied material for youth orchestras or amateur musicians. For different occasions the performers can put together pairs or even suites of movements that are compatible in terms of their key and character.

Given that hardly any printed collections of new keyboard music were offered in Germany in the first decades of the 18th century, Christoph Graupner's eight Partien auf das Clavier , published in 1718, marked a new beginning. The suites are arranged according to an ascending sequence of notes and generally follow the scheme Allemande - Courante - Sarabande - Gigue, but this order is repeatedly broken, also by movements that are rather unusual for a suite. The focus is on the characteristics of the individual movements and the joy of playing with figures typical for the movement or instrument, as well as on challenging playing techniques, such as hand changes in runs (passaggi), wide-ranging chord breaks and the use of the thumb, which was not very common at the time. In this respect, Graupner's suites offer not so much a formal advancement, but rather an expansion of the demands of playing technique. Although several CD recordings of these suites already exist, this volume constitutes the first modern Urtext edition. Complementing her scholarly activities, the editor Genevieve Soly provides important impulses on performance practice in the preface, especially on the execution of the passaggi and the ornamentation, thus opening up the view on her activity as a harpsichordist.

These TWO SUITES were composed in response to a request form Heini Schneebeli, the musical director of 'TROMBONANZA 2017'. Santa Fe in Argentina is the backdrop for this exciting annual event involving many hundreds of student and professional players.

The SECOND SUITE has five movements and is intended for a quartet of younger tenor trombonists working with a teacher on the fifth part on bass trombone who will add richness and depth to the ensemble sound.

It is my hope that this piece will encourage, entertain and challenge student players and provide useful concert material for use in the promotion of this unique and versatile instrument.

Written in 2001, this work was conceived by the need to enlarge the repertoire of works for solo cello, an important goal since the repertoire of such works is limited. Most cellists are limited to performances of such well-known solo works as the Suites of Bach, written almost 300 years ago, as well as other classics of the genre by Max Reger, Zoltan Kodaly, Benjamin Britten, Gaspar Cassado, Enric Casals, etc.

The intention of the Suite Exotique is to revolutionize the concept of the Baroque suite by transforming the suite into a collection of modern dances, which are both contemporary and widely recognized today. Thus, the dances of the Baroque suite, such as Allemande, Courante, Sarabande are substituted for the Tango, Milonga, Blues in such a way that the traditional formal structure of six movements of Baroque dances is modernized by rhythms and contemporary styles which coexist in the Modern world, but are separate from and do not pertain to those works which are normally considered to belong to the realm of cultured music.

Apart from the fusion represented by the mixture of a Baroque genre with modern, urban musical language found in this work, the subtitle exotica is appropriate due to the originality of writing such a work for cello solo. This work allows the interpreter to explore and take full advantage of their technical, artistic and expressive abilities.

This work establishes a total symbiosis between the instrument and the evolutionary transformation of its musical language which in turn creates a style adapted to the expressive requirements of the work itself. The specific techniques and qualities of the cello are placed in service of the required style and concept of each movement of the Suite. At the same time those stylistic characteristics are transformed and adapted to the particular characteristics of the cello and taking full advantage of the instruments polyphonic, sonic, aesthetic qualities as well as its timbre.

The Suite Exotique was premiered in August, 2003 during the International Music Festival of Ibiza by the Russian cellist Svetlana Tovstukha.

Charles Camilleri (1931 - 2009) was a Maltese composer. As a teenager, he composed a number of works based on folk music and legends of his native Malta. He moved from his early influences by Maltese folk music to a musical form in which nothing is fixed and his compositions evolve from themselves with a sense of fluency and inevitability. He composed over 100 works for orchestra, chamber ensemble, voice and solo instruments. Camilleri's work has been performed throughout the world and his research of folk music and improvisation, the influences of the sounds of Africa and Asia, together with the academic study of European music, helped him create a universal style. Camilleri is recognized in Malta as one of the major composers of his generation. He died on 3 January 2009 at the age of 77. His funeral took place two days later at Naxxar, his long-time town of residence. Flags across Malta were flown at half-mast in tribute to him. Just like Bach's 6 suites for cello solo, these 6 arabesques are composed of a number of distinct movements which follow the suite principle. The melodies in these 6 arabesques are influenced by Mediterranean folk music.
