Hymn tune Once again, Arnold Sherman has collaborated with pianist Joel Raney on this energetic setting of Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, for 3-6 octaves. Originally arranged for piano, Arnold has adapted Joel's setting for handbell choirs. The fresh harmonic structure and repeated rhythmic ideas work wonderfully on handbells. The use of mart sounds and big, thick chords is offset by a more legato and augmented melody in the dynamic mid-section.

The cantata Ich liebe den Hochsten von ganzem Gemute (I love the Almighty with all of my spirit) BWV 174 was composed for Whit Monday 1729. It probably belongs to Bach's fourth cycle of cantatas, known as the Picander cycle. Most of the cantata is taken up by the introductory Sinfonia. This is a reworking of the first movement of the famous third Brandenburg Concerto BWV 1048. Bach took the movement almost unaltered and simply added wind parts to strengthen the sound to the nine string parts (three violins, three violas, three violoncelli) and basso continuo - two corni da caccia and two oboes, reinforced by two violins, an oboe da caccia (taille) and a viola. The following movements (aria, recitative, aria) form a distinct contrast with their chamber music scoring (two oboes or one or two string parts with basso continuo). A simple four-part chorale concludes the cantata. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3117400.

This uplifting prayer for peace is an anthem setting of Thomas Cranmer's Collect for the Second Sunday after Epiphany. And perhaps in the spirit of the day's epistle - an exhortation from Romans 12 to practise those gifts received through grace - the composer offers here a beautiful account of his choral idiom: a matter of precisely imagined textures, as sensitive to individual line and contour as to the seamless dovetailing of motifs and harmony, and of majestic, purposefully cadenced phrases in affective unity with the sense and breathing of the text. Written for the 2011 Liturgical Music Course and premiered in Winchester Cathedral, Almighty and Everlasting God is well within the standard of capable church choirs, and offers an absorbing and memorable enhancement of reverence in worship for a variety of occasions.
