Racconto (Tale)/ Capri/ Cielo sereno (Clear sky)/ Tano/ Napolitango/ Luci della spiaggia (Beach lights)/ Fantasia mediterranea (Mediterranean fantasy)/ Una lacrima ridente (A smiling tear)/ Quartieri spagnoli/ Marcia dei pomodori (March of the tomatos)Being interested in certain aspects of popular music, I became aware of several similarities between popular Neapolitan melodies and the Argentinean tango. Napolitango is based on an imaginary journey to Naples and Buenos Aires. In retaining certain characteristics of the original music, Napolitango embodies an inspiration and an almost theatrically passionate character which is common to these two genres. The piece has been composed for the Parisian Festival Paris Banlieues Tango 2001.(S. Di Stefano).

The range of expression is wide, moving from dance-like rhythms -- making use of irregular meters -- to rather dreamy textures. Throughout much of the work, even in the softer, more fantasy-like middle section, the use of percussion -- gongs, cowbells, and various drums -- is prevalent. --N.G.

A truly masterful fantasy on an English folk song, this piece shows the exceptional musical development found in many of the greatest classical symphonies. The fantasy is roughly in the style of the classical rondo (ABACA) and features fine counterpoint and engaging melodies. This piece can be played in an orchestral and quartet setting and is both challenging and fun to play.My Fantasy on The Wee Cooper of Fife was one of four such fantasies I wrote for my daughter April when she was studying the violin, and I had hopes that when she reached the age of wisdom and proficiency she would play them with her friends. Life being what is it, she eventually gave up the violin and chose a completely different career for herself-though we are still the best of friends! I found the song in a collection of folk songs for children where it is called Rissoldy Rossoldy. Except for a few notes, the song was almost identical to the English folksong The Wee Cooper of Fife, which begins: There was a Wee Cooper named Fife / nickity nackety roo noo roo / He took him to wed a gentle wife / nickity nackety roo noo roo / She would na card she would na spin / for fear 't would harm her gentle skin.... The tune is rollicking and words are amusing, and yes, eventually they worked out their problems! The Fantasy is roughly in the style of the classical rondo, which is ABACA coda, such as one finds in the last movements of some of Haydn's later symphonies. This composition may be performed by a string orchestra or solo string quartet. - Douglas Townsend.MyA Fantasy on The Wee Cooper of FifeA was one of four such fantasies I wrote for my daughter April when she was studying the violin, and I had hopes that when she reached the age of wisdom and proficiency she would play them with her friends. Many well-known violinists such as the dedicatee Pablo de Sarasate, together later with Eugene Ysaye and Jacques Thibaud, included in their repertoires Camille Saint-Saens' concert piece composed in 1863. Even today, concert life is hard to imagine without the Introduction et Rondo capriccioso. The highly virtuosic work already inspired critics and audiences during the composer's lifetime; reported about the premiere in 1867 was: The Introduction and the Rondo capriccioso for the same instrument are both original and charming, and Maestro Sarasate, who was in his element here, admirably made the most of it. And a few years later, a music critic described the work as a kind of fantasy waltz in the Spanish style and with a most bewitching effect. After the first performances in 1867, despite success, the work's score and orchestral parts had little chance of publication due to concert companies' reluctance. In 1869 the Paris publishing house G. Hartmann merely published an arrangement for violin and piano produced by the composer's friend Georges Bizet. The orchestral score and parts were first published after the Paris publishing house Durand had acquired publication rights in 1875. The present edition published in collaboration with the G. Henle Verlag is the first critical edition of the work.
