String Quintet in G Major, Op. 3, No. 6

Mozart's String Quintets No. 4-8 contains a set of parts for the following Quintets composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; String Quintet No. 2 in C minor K406 String Quintet No. 3 in C major K515 String Quintet No. 4 in G minor K516 String Quintet No. 5 in D major K593 String Quintet No. 6 in E flat major K614.

String Quintets op. 18 and 87-The genesis of Mendelssohn?s String quintets is closely connected to his friend Eduard Rietz and the latter?s brother Julius. Deeply affected by Eduard?s death in 1832 Mendelssohn exchanged the ?Minuetto?movement in his A major Quintet Op. 18 written six years previously for a newly composed adagio. It was in this form that the work was finally sent to the publisher. The Quintet in B flat major was onlypublished after Mendelssohn?s death; numerous unauthorized entries by Julius Rietz thus found their way into performance practice. An examination of the autograph allowed us to return the work to its original form thecommentary contains detailed information on this.

This edition of Onslow's fifteenth String Quintet has the advantage of being either a two Viola or a two Cello quintet as it is published with parts for two cellists or two violists. It is a major work with good parts for all players with the 1st Violin part having a particularly large numbers of fast semi quavers (sixteenths) in the outer movements.It is known as 'The Bullet' due to the circumstances of its composition: Onslow was boar hunting in the Auvergne when a theme occurred to him. He dismounted and sat on a nearby fallen tree trunk and wrote it down. A boar then burst from the bushes and his companions fired missing the boar and hitting Onslow.The quintet was completed on his recovery and graphically illustrates his sufferings. George Onslow an Anglo-French composer was born in Clermont-Ferrand in July 1784 and died there in October 1853.

The String Quintet in E-flat major Op.97 (with two Violas) is the third work Dvo ák composed during his stay in America. ?This quintet may be said in three of its movements to show the influence of American life and American music upon the composer? wrote the American music critic Henry Krehbiel on 7 January 1894. The use of particular melodic and rhythmic elements in his American compositions as typically found in Afro-American gospels strengthened the gathering conception considering Dvo ák to be the founder of an American national style of music. The String Quintet in E-flat major was premiered on 12 January 1894 at the Carnegie Halland was published shortly afterwards in score and parts by Simrock. Nocturne B Major Op.40 for Violin (2) Viola Violoncello Double Bass.This piece was originally one of two slow movements from String Quintet in G major Op.18 dating from 1874. Dvorak later removed it from the quintet and after various revisions offered it to the Berlin publisher Bote & Bock as an independent work entitled Nocturne.Apart from this version for String Orchestra there also exist versions for Violin and Piano and for four-hand Piano. This title is part of the first Complete Critical Edition of Works by Antonin Dvorak.
