Three fairy-tales based on traditional texts, arranged as a melodrama by Enjott Schneider. The fairy-tales require a gripping narrator and an imaginative organist who finds colourful and gentle sounds that are dramaturgically suitable, depending on the specification of the organ. A valuable addition to the repertoire for organ concerts, organ inaugurations or children's and youth concerts.

With his three songs for mixed a-cappella choir (SSAATB) which were published under the speaking title of 'Fairy Land' in 2013, Hermann Grosse-Schware takes us to the wonderful land of fairy tales. All three six-part works are based on English-language poems by William Shakespeare. The first piece 'Over hill, over dale' from 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' is characterized by melodic sequences and a distinctive rhythm which portrays the content of the piece headed 'Swift and Easy' as does the swaying 3/4 rhythm of No. 2 'Philomel, with melody'. In the lively 'Come unto these yellow sands' (No. 3) one seems to be experiencing the barking of the dog and the crowing of the cock at first hand.

The Fairy-Tale Narratives (Märchenerzählungen) for B-flat Clarinet (ad libitum Violin), Viola and Piano, Op. 132, belong to the few Schumann works that were composed, revised and published in a short time: composed in Düsseldorf, at beginning of October 1853, the new composition was already offered for publication to the Breitkopf & Härtel publishing house on 3 November and printed in February1854. Composition and publication of the Märchenerzählungen were accompanied, though, by difficult times, the final days before the composer was admitted to the psychiatric clinic in Endenich. The work's reception lies in the shadow of the last creative period: The pieces were associated with his life's darker phases and were very little played. The Märchenerzählungen transmit Schumann's single work for this unusual piano trio with viola and clarinet. The only well-known earlier example in this setting at that time is Mozart's “Kegelstatt†Trio K 498 (composed in 1786). Schumann was certainly already acquainted with the work from his Leipzig years - it was played in one of the “quartet sessions†in 1829. This edition is based on a new edition of all Schumann works, Volume II / 3.

As far back as I can remember, I have always been fascinated with fairy tales: with their archetypal characters and set phrases like'Once upon a time...'and'...they all lived happily ever after'. Fairy tales were however also a source of unrest for me as a seismograph of mankinds underlying primal fears and desires. So as a performer and composer I have always felt that Robert Schumann's Marchenerzahlungen [Fairy Tales] (scored for the same instrumentation as my own composition) was a disjointed, complex contemporary work - despite the innocence and naivety of its initial appearance. I therefore do not intend my own Es war einmal (Once upon a time...)to be a mere sentimental, nostalgic flight into the distant past, but as a naive and fantastical alternative concept to our genuine world with all its upheavals. Originally conceived as a piano duet in 1908 and later arranged for orchestra in 1911, this popular set was inspired by the 17th-century fairy tales penned by Charles Perrault and Marie Catherine Aulnoy. Some of the compositions are preceded by excerpts from the corresponding fairy tales.

Bozena Nemtsova is one of the foremost Czech authors of the 19th century and among the greatest storytellers, with her treasure trove of fairy tales. Her stories also enjoy great popularity in Russia: The Twelve Months translated by Nikolai Leskov, provides the basis for Rodion Shchedrin's opera, A Christmas Tale. With traces of familiar fairy tales such as Cinderella and Snow White, the story tells of a beautiful, hardworking but unloved stepdaughter and her search for a violet in the snow. Ultimately she receives help from the months of the year and her kindheartedness is rewarded.

Bleak Forest is a piece for smaller concert bands and offers the musicians above all space to improve their sound and their effect playing. The technical requirements are therefore deliberately kept low. With this piece, the composer won the VLAMO International Composition Contest 2022. Thematically, the work is influenced by the composer's childhood memories. In his hometown there was a dark and mysterious forest, that seemed to the children in the small village to be magical. Without a reasonable explanation, every trip into the woods was exciting and somewhat terrifying. There were tales of dangerous animals, which can be heard at the beginning of the piece, as well as magical beasts. The magic of the forest is depicted musically from bar 70 in the andante section. The snapping of the fingers represents single raindrops. From bar 99 onwards, we hear the trek home, with the occasional moments of trepidation as the children spook each other with their fanciful tales. In the end, though, we arrive safely at home because after all, magical beasts only exist in fairy tales don’t they? Andreas Ziegelbäck studied music education at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, and history at the Paris Lodron Universität, Salzburg. In addition to his studies, he trained in ensemble conducting for wind orchestra with conductor and composer Thomas Doss. It was Doss who sparked Ziegelbäck's interest in composing. In 2021, Andreas Ziegelbäck completed his composition studies with Johannes Maria Staud. In 2020, he took part in a brass band composition masterclass in Bern with Oliver Waespi, followed by a premiere by the Swiss Army Brass Band.

Dan Welcher’s fascinating work for soprano sax is both a refraction of Mendelssohn’s music for A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and his own incidental music to Shakespeare’s comedy. The work’s title, AS LIGHT AS BIRD FROM BRIER, quotes from Oberon (King of the Fairies) invoking revelry at the play’s climactic wedding scene. Welcher’s fantasy skips among the most beloved themes of Mendelssohn’s Midsummer – giving the saxophonist quite a workout, and the listener a midsummer delight.AS LIGHT AS BIRD FROM BRIER is loosely based on Shakespeare’s play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which has haunted me since I was nine years old. My parents subscribed me to The Children’s Record Guild, and every month a new 78rpm vinyl record would arrive in the mail. They were mostly fairy tales and “kids lit,†but in this case it was a very condensed performance of the actual play, with Mendelssohn’s music. I loved it immediately, and still do – I saw a performance in 2014 at the Stratford Festival that literally stalks my dreams. When I was commissioned by saxophonist Stephen Page to compose a work for soprano saxophone and piano two years later, I channeled Mendelssohn as an inspiration: specifically, the Overture, the Scherzo, the Intermezzo, the fairy’s song “You spotted snakes with double tongue,†and the Rustics’ Dance. But it’s not a pastiche – most of the music is completely my own, though attentive listeners will detect snatches of Mendelssohn’s haunting score throughout. This piece joins MILL SONGS and FLORESTAN’S FALCON among works honoring my favorite 19th-century composers (in those cases, Schubert and Schumann) without ripping them off. As Stravinsky did in his ballet Pulcinella, I have borrowed fragments of melody from a much-loved composer, and made a fabric of harmonies and scales that are genetically related to Mendelssohn, but unmistakably Welcher. In this work, the saxophonist is Puck – skittish, dazzlingly fast, and brilliant in the outer parts, and a mischievous Cupid in the long, central Love Song. (Remember how Puck anoints Titania’s eyes with the juice from a magic flower, which causes her to fall in love with Bottom the weaver, who has been bewitched and wears a donkey’s head?) The music traces Puck’s magic flight, the finding of the flower, Titania’s love-scene with Bottom and her fairies, and the rustic players – whose rehearsal of the funniest play-within-the-play in literature is interrupted by Puck’s dirty tricks.I greatly enjoyed the process of writing this piece, and often found myself quite moved even as I was writing it... which rarely happens. Stephen Page, who commissioned the work, is a consummate artist (and a bit of a Puck himself). The title comes from Oberon’s final speech in the play:Through the house, give glimmering light,By the dead and drowsy fire.Every elf and fairy spriteHop as light as bird from brier,And this ditty, after me,Sing, and dance it trippingly.

Maxime Aulio was so enthralled by Monique de Huetras’ book Contes et légendes de Savoie, which contains tales and legends from the depths of the earth to the tops of the mountains, that he had to translate it into music. Music presents the perfect medium to add colour to the stories and life to the characters. Like voices from the past The Bilberry Fairy and the Chamois, The Magic Stick and The Lady from Val de Fier all appear for a while, and time stands still as you are told The Legend of Duvallon.
