Jahrhunderts entwickelte Andrea Amati die Instrumentenvorlagen und Konstruktionsnormen, welche, von seiner Familie und seinen Kollegen weiterentwickelt, bis heute der Standard des Geigenbaus sind. Aber wissen wir, wie sich die Geige entwickelt hat oder was vor Cremona passiert ist? Die Überreste der ältesten Zentren unserer Zivilisation zeugen oft von einem Interesse an Saiteninstrumenten, aber die nomadischen Bogenschützen aus den asiatischen Steppen waren die ersten, die einen Bogen verwendeten, um Saiten klingen zu lassen. Diese Technik breitete sich zunächst durch Handel, Religion und Eroberung unter den benachbarten asiatischen Kulturen aus und wurde weitergegeben, als der Osten und der Westen begannen, sich zu entdecken und zu erforschen. Dabei ermöglichte die Seidenstraße einen beträchtlichen Austausch sowohl an Handel als auch Kultur. Weder die alten Griechen noch die Römer waren mit Streichinstrumenten vertraut, es waren islamische Eroberungen, die das Wissen um Bogentechnik und Fortschritte im Instrumentenbau in die ganze Welt trugen, tausend Jahre bevor Amatis in Cremona tätig war.
