Saxophone study material that is aimed at musical expression and sound, instead of virtuosity is always in short supply. Der Schwerpunkt dieser Etuden liegt nicht auf Virtuositat, sondern auf dem eigentlichen Zweck des Musizierens: musikalischem Ausdruck und Klang. Alle funfzehn in diesem Band versammelten Etuden stammen aus der Feder von ausgezeichneten Komponisten und erweitern in ihrer Vielfalt den musikalischen Horizont des Saxophonisten. Die beiliegende CD wurde vom japanischen Saxophonvirtuosen Nobuya Sugawa eingespielt.

Following the successful publication of Homenaje a Rodrigo (2015), containing four pieces by Alessandro Spazzoli – one of which was performed in the presence of the composer’s daughter, Cecilia Rodrigo, during her visit to the International Convention in Alessandria –, here is the second volume. It contains more tributes to Rodrigo written on my input by five well-known Italian and Spanish composers, two of whom are also guitarists and have therefore written the fingering for their own pieces.
Giovanni Podera plunges us into a typically Rodrigo-like atmosphere with his evocative Fantasia, while the following three compositions are full of direct quotations from pieces also for guitar by the great composer from Valencia. Thus, Marco Simoni, in his expressive Junto a Rodrigo – which also provides the title to the volume – plays with themes taken from Junto al Generalife and from Dos piezas caballerescas for a cello ensemble as well as hinting at reminiscences of Tiento antiguo. As for Marco Smaili, in his impressionistic Fronda de la tarde, he evokes quite evidently Zarabanda lejana and Invocación y Danza, but there are more hidden references to Caminos de Santiago and even to the very famous Concierto de Aranjuez. Marco Reghezza builds his heart-breaking Nana estrellada on a sequence of chords used by Rodrigo in the fantasia ¡Que buen caminito!.
On the other hand, there are no direct quotations and echoes of Rodrigo’s way of writing in the Fuga a quattro voci by Paolo Ugoletti. However it was Rodrigo himself who constructed four-part imitative passages for guitar in Pasacalle and in the Ricercare of the Fantasia para un Gentilhombre. The close polyphony of the piece by Ugoletti may be considered as a tribute to this kind of craft shown by Rodrigo who, like Ugoletti, was able to write such dense and idiomatic counterpoint without being a guitar-player.
I am pleased that this volume comes out in the imminence of the 20th anniversary of the disappearance of the illustrious Spanish composer who gave so much to the musicians – and not only to them.

De Italiaanse pianist, componist, arrangeur en dirigent Gian Piero Reverberi is de oprichter en muzikaal leider van het succesvolle barokensemble Rondo Veneziano. Sinfonia per un Addio is een van de bekendste werken, die Reverbivoor dit unieke ensemble schreef. Het is een gemakkelijk in het gehoor liggend werk, dat op een mooie wijze door Lorenzo Bocci is bewerkt voor harmonieorkest.

Der italienische Pianist, Komponist, Arrangeur und Dirigent Gian Piero Reverberi ist der Gründer und musikalische Leiter des erfolgreichen zeitgenössischen Barockensembles Rondo Veneziano. Sinfonia per un Addio ist eines der bekanntesten Stücke, die Reverberi für diese einzigartige Formation schrieb. Die eingängige Musik eignet sich gut für eine Blasorchesterbearbeitung, die Lorenzo Bocci ausgezeichnet gelungen ist.

En 1980, le pianiste et compositeur italien Gian Piero Reverberi fonde l’ensemble Rondò Veneziano. Le style musical, directement inspiré de la musique baroque et associé des instruments modernes (batterie, guitare basse, synthé), séduit immédiatement. Avec Concerto et San Marco, Sinfonia per un Addio est un des plus grands succès de cet ensemble unique. La musique est légère, mélodieuse et facile suivre. Lorenzo Bocci a réalisé un arrangement pour Orchestre d’Harmonie qui conserve le charme authentiquement vénitien du Rondò Veneziano.

Nino Rota (1911-1979) war ein italienischer Komponist, der hauptsächlich Filmmusik schrieb. Zu seinen ungefähr 150 Filmmusiken zählen die Soundtracks für Der Pate I und II und zahlreiche weitere Filme von berühmten Regisseuren, wie Federico Fellini, Luigi Visconti und Francis Ford Coppola. Sein Landsmann Lorenzo Bocci ehrt ihn nun mit diesem Medley.

Les musiques de Nino Rota ont marqué l’histoire du cinéma. Ses thèmes mythiques sont associés des scènes inoubliables de films de grands réalisateurs comme Fellini, Visconti ou Coppola (avec Le Parrain I et Le Parrain II pour lequel il reçut un Oscar en 1974). Ce medley signé Lorenzo Bocci rassemble quatre des partitions les plus célèbres du maître italien : Bevete piú latte (Boccace 70), Amarcord, La dolce vota et La Passarella (8 ½).

Nino Rota è il compositore di alcune delle colonne sonore più famose mai scritte, sia per il grande cinema italiano (indimenticabili le collaborazioni con Federico Fellini) sia per Hollywood (basti pensare alla colonna sonora de Il Padrino, vincitrice del meritatissimo oscar). Il medley include musiche tratte da Amarcord, 8½, La Dolce Vita e Boccaccio ’70.
