Fun With the Cello

My youngest son Leif was learning the piano part. We wanted tosurprise his teacher Graeme Humphrey with a private performance. Itwas during piano practise that I started thinking 'why not!' why notcompose my own swan! The idea is not a new one. There is a beautiful- and difficult! - Swan by Finnish composer Selim Palmgren (1878-1951) and a variante on Saint-Saëns' original by his student LeopoldGodowsky (1870-1938) enriched in the deliciously imaginative way sotypical of him. For my own undertaking I wanted part of the materialto associate with Saint-Saëns' Swan to be immediately recognisable.Beyond beauty and resplendence I sought no further.Two different endings hint at Saint-Saëns' original in which the lastchord of the piano part has the length of an eighth-note. A remarkableend to a piece of such dignity and grandeur possibly eccentric butit often leads to performances ending on a fermata for both players.This is unquestionably very beautiful and atmospheric and comeswith a guaranteed effect on an audience which is ready to seek reliefin a sigh. This to be weighed of course against the composer's owndesign. Your call.

In memory of Christopher Rowland. Originally a concerto for Cello and chamber orchestra now for Cello with a Piano reduction of the orchestral part.The concerto is in four movements which are played without a break: Meditation Intermezzo Toccata-Scherzo and Song. The work lasts for some 18 minutes and was scored for two oboes two horns timpani (doubling tubular bells) and strings(found here in a Cello/Piano form). It is organised in one large arch-shaped structure with two fast inner movements flanked by two outer slow ones. The solo cello opens the work reflectively and introduces core melodic material which is continuously developed throughout theconcerto. Gradually the strings enter then wind and timpani and build a pyramid twelve-note chord at the peak of which there is a dramatic climax. The music then subsides (solo cello again) but links to the two faster middle movements. The second movement Intermezzo has an ABA structure and in its middle section quotes the opening of Shostakovich's Third String Quartet (written in the same year as Christopher Rowland was born!). Indeed the ghost of Shostakovich looms large throughout the concerto in more ways than one. The Toccata-Scherzo is energetic and rhythmically-charged again using an ABA structure. Here the writing for solo cello is quite virtuosic but not I hope in a shallow sense. The music builds inexorably towards a powerful climax underpinned by the opening twelve-note chord's re-appearance together with a violent outburst from the timpani at which point a tonal resolution (on G) arrives through a pianissimo held chord on strings which leads directly to the final movement - Song. And so the music arrives at its emotional heart through a simple melody (present in other forms throughout the work) announced by solo cello at the very top of its register against a quiet backdrop of horns and strings. Par VIVALDI ANTONIO. Throughout his life, Antonio Vivaldi wrote almost thirty instrumental works that use the cello as a solo instrument. Vivaldi knew how to tailor his music to the cello and in doing so, helped to establish this still young instrument in the music of that time. The Concerto RV 531 is the only double concerto in Vivaldi?s ?uvre for two solo violoncellos. The two solo parts take centre stage with virtuosic passages but lie on the instrument so well that they can be comfortably mastered by advanced students. The edition is based on the careful evaluation of Vivaldi?s autograph score which is the main source and several inconsistencies found in previous editions have been clarified. At the same time the edition allows for a flexible realisation of this concerto: it can be performed by a full tutti orchestra or by one performer per part. If that fails this music offers an alternative: the sea is present in the middle section while the legend itself is mused over from the very first note.Petra tou Romiou (Rock of the Greek) also known as Aphrodite's Rock the birthplace of the Goddess of Love - is situated on the seaside near Palaepaphos. capital of the island during Greco-Roman times. Palaepaphos (Old Paphos) was visited by Paul the Apostle during the 1st century AD and is now on the UNESCO list ofcultural and natural treasures of the world's heritage. Aphrodite's Rock was written in Nicosia Cyprus in late June 2013. From having come upon so much beauty during my visit such as the jaw-dropping mosaics of Paphos accompanied by the transitional ever-changing sea music was the natural result.The first and third part of my piece reflects upon the seducing legend of the birthplace while the middle section is an attempt to picture the surrounding sea. From Cyprus I was flown back to England for the wedding of Sian and Steve Newman on June 29 2013. This piece is their wedding gift.
