Bruckner began composing the Eighth Symphony, his last completed symphony, in July 1884, working mainly during the summer vacations from his duties at the University of Vienna and the Vienna Conservatory. When he finished the work's revelatory finale, he signed it Hallelujah, and reported enthusiastically, The Finale is the most significant movement of my life. Following the premiere performance, a peer composer penned, Its success was almost without precedent. It was the absolute victory of light over darkness. This work leaps to life with awe-inspiring power in this first-ever setting for string orchestra with optional timpani. Transposed from its original key of C minor/major to D minor/major, the music sits nicely for all parts, ready for any concert or festival. The conductor should encourage students to vary the bow lanes, weight, and speed to produce powerful forte and expressive piano dynamics. Encourage mature players to make expressive fingering choices and to use vibrato. Students should practice coloring the tone and intensity through bowing lanes, variable bow weight, and appropriate bow speeds.Bruckner began composing the Eighth Symphony, his last completed symphony, in July 1884, working mainly during the summer vacations from his duties at the University of Vienna and the Vienna Conservatory. Ludwig van Beethoven conceived his Seventh Symphony in the summer of 1811 in the Bohemian spa of Teplitz. The fair copy of the score autograph was made the following year. The work was heard for the first time on 8 December 1813 in the auditorium of the Vienna University, when the Seventh was given its first, enthusiastically applauded audition - together with the programmatic symphony Wellington's Victory or the Battle of Victoria op. 91.The present Urtext edition is the first to be based on the evaluation of all the sources transmitted for the work. The score contains the complete Critical Report. Observations deemed particularly important, as well as divergences from established editions, are clearly marked within it.Words are not enough to praise this exemplary edition, resulting from many years of systematic editorial work on the sources. Breitkopf's source-critical, practice-oriented edition by Clive Brown and Peter Hauschild will provide valuable new impulses in the interpretation of Beethoven's music. (Kurt Masur, 2006)This is the first new edition of the 7th Symphony for which all surviving sources have been examined. The examination brought up a number of text-critical problems with respect to divergent readings. (Peter Hauschild).

During his Bohemian spa trip in September 1811, Beethoven notated the first sketches for the Seventh Symphony, a work that occupied him until May 1812 - parallel at times with its disparate sister work, the Eighth Symphony in F major. After a non-public rehearsal on 21 April 1813 in Archduke Rudolph's palace, the Seventh was officially premiered on 8 December, together with the programmatic symphony Wellington's Victory or the Battle of Vitoria op. 91. The concert given before 5,000 enthusiastic listeners became Beethoven's greatest success, probably mainly because of the second mentioned work. The present edition from the new Beethoven Complete Edition re-evaluates the complicated source situation, using as the main sources only the autograph and the parts from the premiere. Revealed could be a number of writing errors and misunderstandings in the copying of the parts, leading to changes from previous editions, particularly concerning numerous markings of dynamics and articulation.

This celebratory and dramatic rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner arranged for brass and percussion by Sean O'Loughlin has become a favorite of both the Oregon Symphony and Baltimore Symphony brass players, being played at sporting events including Portland Trailblazers NBA basketball games, Baltimore Orioles baseball games, and Baltimore Ravens football games. With fanfare flourishes and colorful touches, this grand arrangement gives each section an opportunity to play the melody, making for a truly dynamic experience. In the winter of 2009 my good friend David Bamonte, who is the assistant principal trumpet in the Oregon Symphony, asked if I had written an arrangement of The Star-Spangled Banner for brass. The result is this version of The Star-Spangled Banner that was premiered at a Portland Trailblazers NBA basketball game at the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon. It has enjoyed several performances at those games over the years, and the team has been led to victory after each performance. Coincidence? Over the past decade, this same arrangement has gone on to performances by the Baltimore Symphony brass and percussion at the Baltimore Orioles baseball games and the Baltimore Ravens football games. The arrangement itself was written to showcase the extraordinary talent and sound of the Oregon Symphony Brass players. Percussion parts were added later for an expanded performance. A brief opening and closing fanfare was added to set the stage for the tone and grandeur of the music. Throughout the arrangement, each section gets the opportunity to play the melody while adding some interesting colors to support the iconic anthem. It is instantly majestic and celebratory in nature and a fitting tribute to our great nation.
