Intended especially for the growing number of multicultural, bilingual (Latino/Anglo) parishes and communities in the United States, Oramos Cantando / We Pray in Song is a hymnal and service book that is comprehensive enough to satisfy the liturgical needs of such communities, when they are worshipping in Spanish, in English, or bilingually. Bilingual from the first page to the last. Organized to reflect the liturgical life of the Church: morning, evening and night prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours, the sacramental rites of Christian initiation of adults, baptism of children, holy communion outside Mass, eucharistic exposition and benediction, reconciliation of penitents, anointing of the sick, marriage, and funerals, the Order of Mass, service music, hymns and songs, lectionary responsorial psalms. All ritual texts are from the English- and Spanish-language liturgical books approved for use in the dioceses of the United States of America Seventy settings of psalms and biblical canticles in a variety of styles, for use in the Liturgy of the Hours, at Mass, and in other liturgical rites. Many employ Gelineau, Guimont, or Conception Abbey tones. Standards from the “Celebration-style†repertoire by Haugen, Joncas, Haas, and others. All with Spanish and English texts ICEL chants for the Order of Mass, accompanied by the complementary plainsong chants in Spanish. Five bilingual settings of the ordinary of the Mass, along with one Latin and two English-only Mass settings, plus a number of additional service music items to serve the liturgical needs of Anglo/Latino parishes for many years to come A broad and stylistically diverse collection of nearly 550 hymns, psalms, and inspired songs, containing the best and most beloved traditional and contemporary music of Latino and Anglo communities, with more than 300 items newly translated according to guidelines for preserving meaning, rhyme, and meter Music from around the world, encompassing plainsong chants, classical hymnody, contemporary scripture-based songs, Taizé chants, and world music from Asia and Africa. Settings originally with Spanish texts are from the United States, Spain, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean Lectionary psalms with USCCB-approved refrains in both English and Spanish and verses from The Revised Grail Psalms and the salterio of Spain’s Conferencia Episcopal Española (CEE). These bilingual lectionary psalms have been included in the Sacred Song missalette program of The Liturgical Press since 2005 Eleven indexes: liturgical, topical, psalms and canticles, service music, scripture references in hymns, hymn tunes, tune meters, musical settings using languages other than Spanish and English, psalm refrains set to music, common titles and first lines, and hymnal contributors (composers, authors, translators, sources) A hymnal which not only addresses the liturgical experience of today, but also opens the door to new possibilities in the future. Fulfilling the statement of the American bishops: Liturgical music today must reflect the multicultural diversity and intercultural relationships of the members of the gathered liturgical assembly. The varied use of musical forms such as ostinato refrains, call and response, song translations, and bilingual or multilingual repertoire can assist in weaving the diverse languages and ethnicities of the liturgical assembly into a tapestry of sung praise. Cumple la declaración de los obispos americanos: “La música litúrgica de hoy debe reflejar la diversidad multicultural y las relaciones interculturales de los miembros de la asamblea litúrgica reunida. El uso variado de formas musicales como estribillos en ostinato, llamado y respuesta, traducción de cantos, y el repertorio bilingüe o multilingüe puede ayudar a entretejer los diferentes idiomas y etnias de la asamblea litúrgica en un tapiz de alabanza cantada.†Cantemos al Señor, 60 There is no doubt that the goal of singing each other's liturgical music as an expression of the catholicity of our faith embodied in this volume, does in fact allow bilingual and multicultural parishes through the United States—and beyond—to respond to the liturgical needs of today while opening the door to new possibilities. — Becca Whitla The Hymn Society Journal. This, the ninth of a series of books begun in 1983, contains Brian Wren's 36 most recent hymns (2009 to 2012). It is nicely presented and laid out in a user-friendly way. The hymns are divided into five thematic sections: Jesus from Cradle to Cross; Easter Hymns; Church and Mission; Praise; and Metrical Psalms. This last section, rooted in (though not bound by) the Old Testament, is often influenced by Isaac Watts and will be of more use to some than others; it concludes with a tremendous rendering of Psalm 8; a paean of praise which all will love, set to a stirring tune. Each section is prefaced with a single page introduction listing the contents and, in some instances, giving an interesting insight into Brian Wren's theology and thinking which provides food for contemplation. Each hymn is printed in words format with all the necessary information for inclusion in an order of worship. Every hymn is also printed with full score music for accompaniment interlined with the words. The book is slightly larger than A5, and there are various useful indexes. The tunes range from ancient to modern, some very familiar, including Candler (better known as Ye Banks and Braes). A number are of a metre where alternative tunes are available. Those tunes which are new vary in ease of use; some will be readily picked up, others would prove challenging for occasional use in a small congregation but could be used as music group items. These are hymns which need to be read as a whole and require thought. The words are chosen with care and notable as much for those not used as those included e.g.: 'Christ, untameably alive,/ breathe your life upon us - / Compass, Governor and Guide, / with us and beyond us,/ Sky and Sunlight, / spreading Vine./ Spring of Living Water,/ Truth and Wisdom, Way and Word,/ here, and then hereafter.' These hymns will be useful in worship as either sung or read pieces, and will also prove an invaluable resource for private devotion.

In his roles as Music Director at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris and in the Royal Choir [chapel] of Louis XV, Andre Campra (1660-1744) composed numerous motets which frequently displayed the influence of contemporary opera. If today Campra is known almost exclusively for his famous Requiem, nevertheless his more than forty motets composed for soli, choir and orchestra are still awaiting discovery. Among these is a setting of Psalm 129, De profundis, published here in a new critical edition after the autograph score. The work was composed in 1723 during the first months of Campra's service to the French king and it proves to be the equal to the compositions of Michel-Richard de Lalande, who during his lifetime shaped and dominated the genre of the Grand Motet.. The six collections of Vierstimmige Motetten und Arien published by Johann Adam Hiller offer a selection of motets, mostly from the second half of the 18th century. They show us the products of a new age of achievement in which the motet was again able to flourish after this genre had led only a shadowlike existence for more than a century. The editor of those collections, Johann Adam Hiller, was active as a composer of Singspie, editor of various musical periodicals, leader of the Gewandhaus concerts, University Director of Music, musical director of the Neukirche, and finally, from 1789, Thomaskantor in Leipzig. Upon Hiller's assumption of the office of Thomaskantor the older motets were replaced in Leipzig church services by contemporary compositions. Printed texts which have been preserved show that Hiller's collections were used widely. A Critical Report from the editor, Uwe Wolf, with additional information concerning the motets and their composers, will be published to cover all the collections.

Music of Unity and Peace is the result of an unprecedented collaboration between the Community and the international staff of Deutsche Grammophon / Universal Music. The latter offered their experience and expertise to produce this album. The Taizé Community welcomed this project with a view to making its songs known to a wider audience. Those who have already taken part in the international meetings in Taizé will meet once again the atmosphere that touched them. Many others will discover a reflection of that contemplative prayer. After the bells, familiar with visitors to Taizé, we are led into songs interpreted by a choir of young adults and musicians from different countries, some recordings made during the community prayers in July 2014, and also some psalms and responses sung just by the brothers. You will therefore hear on some tracks the choral singing of more than two and a half thousand people, whereas other pieces give a taste of the intimacy which envelops prayer in Taizé. The song “Let All Who Are Thirsty Come†is included for the first time in a recording.
