A great piece for developing players to learn the sensibilities of the classical period, Doris Gazda has taken 3 beautiful waltzes from Sechs Deutsche Tanze fur Orchester, Kv. 509, originally written by Mozart as an orchestral work, and combined and arranged them for easy string orchestra. The arrangement is extremely playable and is a wonderful way to encourage legato playing as well as good rhythmic execution.

The Scubert volume now appearing in the Leggiero series gives a varied picture of the dances of the first third of the 19th century. These include waltzes, galops, minuets, landler, sentimental waltzes, a series of ecossaises, and Wiener Deutsche. The dances, although typical, are individual in character. The range of the violin parts does not go beyond the third position or that of the cello part beyond the fourth position. The viola may be replaced by a third violin section, so the part is provided in both an alto and treble clef version. The material also includes an ad libitum double-bass part.

Following the immense success of his fi rst waltzes Émile Waldteufel decided to continue composing works only in this genre. As a result of this he was nicknamed ‘The French Strauss’. He composed more than 250 dances, the best-known being the waltzes Les patineurs (Ice Skaters), Estudiantina and España. España was composed in 1886, based on the famous 1883 rhapsody of the same name by Emmanuel Chabrier.

The dances originally written by Franz Schubert for piano sound equally well on the accordeon. The well-known Hungarian accordeon player and teacher László Ernyei took advantage of this opportunity when he selected and transcribed for this volume the pieces best suited to his instrument. Included among the many Ländler, waltzes and écossaises are a number of well-known melodies from Dreimäderlhaus.
