On pense également que Saint François d’Assise s’en serait servi pour sa crèche vivante. D’autres attribuent son origine Saint Bonaventure. Quoiqu’il en soit, il est communément reconnu que les strophes ont été écrites ou découvertes par l’Anglais John Francis Wade.
