“As one of the most famous contributors to classical music ever to have lived, Johann Sebastian Bach's (1685-1750) catalogue is extensive. Moreover, being an organist himself, his Organ works are significant and remain ever-popular to this day. When French organist, Marcel Dupré (1886-1971) compiled the series of Bach's Complete Organ Works, it was well-received, and to this day remains popular with all organists. The eighth volume includes a favoured selection of Bach's works, including 21 chorales, and his Prelude and Fugue in E flat. In addition, Dupré's annotations in Complete Organ Works comprise fingerings, rules on technique and instructions on ornamentation, among other aspects. This compilation of J. S. Bach's most loved compositions for the Organ cannot be missed by aspiring performers of the instrument.â€.

Ercole Pasquini (1550 ca-ante 1620), working for many years in Ferrara, then Frescobaldi’s predecessor as organist of the Cappella Giulia, leaves a considerable corpus of keyboard music that identify him as a link between Frescobaldi and Naples. It is half a century since the first critical edition of Ercole Pasquinis keyboard music was published (CEKM, vol. 12). This new edition (in two volumes) appears in the light of subsequent scholarship. It offers new solutions for some troublesome passages. It includes a number of pieces that were not included in the previous edition, but which do seem to have been attributed to Pasquini, as well as unattributed pieces which maywell have been by him. It also takes account of a source (ms. Naples 48, dated ca.1600) which has come to light in the intervening years. This manuscript includes a copy of a Canzona by Pasquini that is older and generally superior to the other surviving copies of this piece. The preface contains detailed discussion of the composers biography, the provenance of the sources, and the performance implications of the notation. Both preface and commentary are in English and Italian.

The composer and organist Paul Siefert, baptized in Gdansk on 28 June 1586 and died there on 6 May 1666, belongs to the 'North German organ school'. Thanks to a grant of the town council of Gdansk, Siefert spent the years from 1607 until probably late 1610 studying in Amsterdam where he got important ideas and suggestions as a pupil of Sweelinck. After his return he became deputy organist in Gdansk. From 1611 to 1616 he worked as an organist first at the church in the old town of Konigsberg, then at the Warsaw court orchestra. On 23 September 1623 he was appointed organist at the Marienkirche of Gdansk in succession to Michael Weyda where he worked until the end of his life. This edition of his organ works contains 13 fantasias, two chorale preludes and a motet as well as a detailed description of the work in the preface and in the critical report.

The few available biographical data tell us that Francisco Correa de Arauxo (or de Acevedo) was born in Seville and baptized probably in September 1584. He was appointed organist of the Salvador, the second church in Seville, in 1599, and ordained priest probably in 1608. After several unsuccessful attempts to become organist of the Cathedral, he accepted an offer to take the main position at the Cathedral of Segovia and remained there until his death, in spite of invitations by the Chapter of Seville to return home and take the office he had always wanted. He is buried in the Cathedral of Segovia. Not unlike J.S. Bach, Correa gives the image of an artist inbetween times, with one foot in tradition and establishment, and the other in revolution and novity. We must recognize the amazing beauty and genius of his music, a genius which sets him apart from all other Spanish, just as Frescobaldi from all other Italians, Grigny from all other French and Bach from all other German composers of their times. The Facultad Organica was published in 1626. This new Urtext edition, edited by Guy Bovet, is based on the Brussels copy; doubtful passages have been compared with the two copies of the Madrid Biblioteca Nacional.

The now-published volumes 9 and 10 have presented a special challenge, for particularly in the field of the chorale arrangements the transmissions are more complex than in any other group of works. This ties in with the crucial question of Bach's authorship, which has been the subject of much controversy in the past. There were heated discussions about it even just prior to our edition, and editors and publisher are aware that the present selection is a thoroughly debatable snapshot. More on this in the volumes' text sections. The so called ,,Neumeister-Chorale are incorporated in the group of the separately transmitted chorale settings in alphabetical order, because the compilation of the pieces does not follow any collection idea of Bach (such as, for example, his larger late collections). The indication ,,Neumeister-Sammlung should facilitate the attribution. Those works requiring further research, besides of some versions, are presented online, since their profile reveals less evidence of the true author. Breitkopf has given the world a splendid edition of the organ works of Bach. These final two volumes offer a wealth of chorale-based music benefiting from the very latest research. Aside from the edition's obvious scholarly merit, a practicing church organist will love the convenience and variety of these volumes. Recommended without hesitation.(Jonathan B. Hall, The American Organist).

Herbert Sumsion was born in Gloucester in 1899, was a chorister in that city, and became an articled pupil of Sir Herbert Brewer, the Cathedral Organist. He later studied at the Royal College of Music before proceeding to organ and teaching posts in or near London. After a short period in America (1926–1928) as Professor of Harmony at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, he accepted the appointment of Organist and Master of the Choristers at Gloucester Cathedral on the sudden death of Brewer. He was able to take up his duties just in time to conduct the 1928 Three Choirs Festival, immediately justifying the confidence placed in him by the high standard of his direction and musicianship. Sumsion was honoured with the Lambeth Doctorate of Music in 1947 and awarded the CBE in 1961. He retired from the post at Gloucester Cathedral in 1967 and continued to be active with teaching and composition until shortly before his death in 1995. He had a special sympathy for the works of the English composers stemming from Vaughan Williams and Elgar, and was responsible for bringing works of younger composers to the attention of the British public. Two great English choral works of this century - Herbert Howells’s Hymnus Paradisi and Gerald Finzi’s Intimations of Immortality - received their premieres at the 1950 Gloucester Festival. These two composers were particularly close friends of Sumsion. It would follow then that Sumsion’s own compositions are in this same mould, yet there is a very distinct style that endears his music to singers and listeners alike. Church music has benefitted tremendously from his work, for his compositions in this medium have been prolific and wide-ranging. Many of his choral works are published by The Royal School of Church Music.

Matthias Weckmann, born in Niederdorla near Muhlhausen (Thuringia) in 1616 and died in Hamburg in 1674, was trained as a musician by Heinrich Schutz in Dresden among others. He worked as an organist in Dresden (Schlosskirche) and Hamburg (St. Jakobi). It is particularly for the Jakobi organ that he wrote his elaborate and virtuoso organ works. Our new edition in the renowned series 'Masters of the North German Organ School' faithfully transfers the works which survived in letter tablature, providing a reliably edited urtext. Volume 1 contains the cantus firmus-based works, 8 authentic verse cycles with 2-7 movements each in which chorale melodies such as 'Es ist das Heil uns kommen her', 'Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ)' or the 'Magnificat' are varied, as well as a cycle on 'Ach wir armen Sunder' attributed to Weckmann. Volume 2 proves him to a master of concertante organ music, containing 3 works with pedal (Fantasia, Fuga and Praeambulum in D) as well as several moderately difficult works to be played on manuals only (6 toccatas, 5 canzonas). Reliable standard edition of the music by one of the great (North) German organ masters.
