G.F. Handel's masterful L'Allegro Il Penseroso Ed Il Moderato have been expertly-edited by Donald Burrows to present this complete vocal score arranged for two Soprano Tenor and Bass Soli with an SATB Chorus and Orchestra. This complete edition of L'Allegro Il Penseroso Ed Il Moderato features the 1740 1741 and 1743 scores reflecting Handel's personal changes involving alternative and additional movements. The 1740 score is a complete reconstruction requiring two Soprano  a Tenor and a Bass soloists. For the longer 1741 score Handel added extra movements toaccommodate additional soloists the complete version of which is included here. Finally the 1743 score boasts a radical change from the previous years with a removal of part three and a significant rearrangement of other movements.  L'Allegro Il Penseroso Ed Il Moderato was first performed on the 27th of February 1740 at the Lincoln's Inn Fields theatre after just over a month of drafting. The work is a setting of a libretto by James Harris and Charles Jennens based on John Milton's two complementary yet contrasting poems about the relative virtues of happiness and melancholy.  This edition of L'Allegro Il Penseroso Ed Il Moderato presents practical versions of the score which are based on the musical schemes of Handel's performances in 1741 and 1743. To mark the Handel Year 2009 Bärenreiter is offering a special set on all Handel’s keyboard music. Up till now all works have been published as individual volumes Keyboard Works I-IV (BA 4221-4224) in the 'Halle Handel Edition'.   These volumes encompass Handel’s output over a long period spanning approx. 1705 to 1750. For the occasion of the coronation of King George II and Queen Caroline which took place in Westminster Abbey on October 11 1727 Handel wrote four splendid anthems and personally supervised their performance which was according to all reports one of great magnificence. The four anthems were enthusiastically received and one or more of them has been performed at every British coronation since 1727. Anthem No. 2 ('The King Shall Rejoice') although less well-known than Anthem No. 1 is an equally splendid example of Handel's ceremonial style - what Burney has affectionately termed his 'big bow-bow manner'. This work contains an opening Allegro brilliant and elegantrather than pompous; a grandiose setting of 'Glory and great worship hast thou laid upon him'; and a lively fugal Alleluia as a conclusion.For six-part chorus of mixed voices with organ or piano accompaniment. This volume contains some attractive yet almost totally unfamiliar keyboard pieces by Handel five of them here published for the first time. Seven are original keyboard compositions three are arrangements by the composer himself of opera arias and the 'Folio' is completed by a movement which occurs in orchestral form in Handel's first opera Almira and by the famous Air from the Water Music. Handel?s three anthems (My song shall be alway HWV 252 O come let us sing HWV 253 O praise the Lord HWV 254) were composed in 1717 and 1718 for Cannons a country estate near to London. They take their nickname the ? Chandos Anthems? from the owner of the estate the First Duke of Chandos .The three pieces are noteworthy for their festive character and their varied orchestral accompaniment. Handel borrows older material from his Italian period and his earlier works for the Chapel Royal in London a standard procedure for this composer who reused particularly successful pieces as starting points for his later works. The scoring for solo voices chorus oboe strings and continuo was tailored to the musical resources of the small country estate. Two additional recorders are needed for ?O come let us sing unto the Lord?.The anthems present the Urtext from the ?Halle Handel Edition? and include uncomplicated and easy-to-play piano reductions. In addition to the original English words the full scores and vocal scores also include a singing translation in German.?The clarity found in these Bärenreiter scores and the excellent keyboard reductions make them very attractive for performers.?(Church Music Quarterly Sept. 2008)

The conductor and Keyboard player Christopher Hogwood has edited the new edition of Music For The Royal Fireworks. The edition is the result of thorough revision and correction based on the source material. During this process some incorrect notes were corrected and in particular the Viola part was revised. Misunderstood instructions from Handel relating to the colla parte coupling of the Viola with the second Oboe as in the overture or with the bass parts have been reassessed. G. F. Handel (1685-1759) was a German-born British composer and organist who spent his life working in London. In addition to his well-known large-scale works like the Water Music and Music for the RoyalFireworks he wrote nearly 200 smaller works for keyboard instruments. The Harmonious Blacksmith is a popular name given to the final movement of Handel's Suite No. 5 in E major forHarpsichord more properly known as Air and Variations (HWV 430). The work was published in 17620 but the name was added at some point in the 19th century some 75 years after the composer’s death.
