Although the moods may vary throughout these evocative works, the elegance and subtly shifting energies of their musical language could only be those of Maurice Ravel. To study them in this full-score edition is to become more fully aware not only of his great originality but also of the constant striving for perfection of form and style that prompted Stravinsky to compare him admiringly to the most perfect of Swiss watchmakers. The Rapsodie Espagnole was Ravel's first entirely orchestral composition. A work whose exotic fantasy and subtle craftsmanship clearly express Ravel's distinctive musical personality, it was first performed publicly at the Théâtre du Châlet in Paris in 1908, confirming the young composer's reputation as an orchestral poet of scintillating originality. In 1911 Ravel re-created for orchestra his highly successful composition for two pianos, the Mother Goose Suite, a truly magical work whose moods range from haunting desolation to tender exaltation. Similarly, Ravel recast his brilliant 1911 piano composition Valses Nobles et Sentimentales as an orchestral score in 1912 (a ballet based on its premiere that year in Paris) and arranged his evocative 1899 piano work Pavane for a Dead Princess for orchestra in 1910. The rich orchestral settings of all four works have made them popular favorites on concert stages worldwide. This superbly prepared edition brings together in one volume authoritative full scores of these four works, reprinted from original French editions. Dover (1989) republication of Rapsodie Espagnole, Ma mère l'Oye, and Valses Nobles et Sentimentales, originally published by Durand, Paris, 1908, 1911, and 1912, respectively, and of Pavane pour une infante défunte, originally published by Max Eschig, Paris, 1910.

Ravel's multi-layered homage in Breitkopf UrtextIn his homage Le Tombeau de Couperin, Ravel is less specifically interested in Couperin than in French music of the late 18th century. In his preface, editor Jean-Francois Monnard explains how Ravel paid a moving and intensely personal tribute to the events of World War I with his multi-layered work. The orchestral version goes back to the original, eponymous piano suite (1914-17). Then, in 1919, the composer selected four pieces from this source, orchestrated them with all of his grace and artistry; the result provides a charming contrast to the pseudo-Baroque musical idiom, and places the pieces in a new and effective sequence. The work quickly gained great popularity immediately after the concertant world premiere, when the three dance movements of the orchestral suite were included in a ballet production. The underpinnings of Monnard's edition are provided by the most important sources. The preface features a great deal of information on the interpretation and performance history of the work. This is the fifth major Ravel work now available in print from Breitkopf Urtext. An homage to Francois Couperin, but most notably to the French music of the late 18th century. In his multi-layered work Ravel assimilates the events of World War I in a moving and intensely personal way.

“Maurice Hauchard (1870-1957) was a French violinist and composer. As a minor composer, often in the shadow of his contemporary, Maurice Ravel, much of Hauchard's music is not widely known. However, his Methodical Study of Positions for Violin remains popular to improve violinist's technique. As an excellent, versatile musician Hauchard loved his art and remains one of the greatest contributors to music education. The fourth volume of Methodical Study of Positions addresses the sixth and seventh positions in detail, through exercises which enable progression using intervals, scales, arpeggios, chromaticism and varying rhythms. All violinists should seek to purchase this Hauchard study series to ensure technical progression to a high level.&rdquo.
