for Flute Oboe Clarinet in Bb Bassoon and Horn in F-Alan Bullard's Dances for Wind Quintet were commissioned by the Marlborough Wind Quintet and first performed by them in the Purcell Room in June 1983. It was subsequently taken up by the Vega Wind Quintet who broadcast it on BBC Radio 3 and since then it has received numerous performances worldwide.

Postcards was written in 1991 for the Vega Wind Quintet who first performed it at the Huddersfield Festival in the same year. It is a reworking of a set of eight Bagatelles written in 1965: each movement has been rewritten and enlarged to a greater or lesser extent. The title was chosen to emphasise the nature of the pieces which are in a sense brief postcards from different genres (fugato dance etc). John McCabe (1939-2015) was a British composer pianist and music administrator. He studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music and built a career as a virtuoso pianist. However he also wrote several hundred musical compositions ranging from large-scale orchestral works to chamber music and solo instrumental pieces - it is said the only classical genre he did not write for was opera. 

Esa-Pekka Salonen's Memoria For Wind Quintet. This work was written as a gift for the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra on their 20th anniversary. It was first performed on 30th November 2003 at the Helsinki Conservatoire Finland by members of the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen. John McCabe's Concerto For Piano And Wind Quintet. Commissioned by the Birmingham Chamber Music Society for first performance by the Venturi Ensemble (Sebastian Bell Philip Jones Roy Jowitt Alan Hammond James Diack and John McCabe) on 21 February 1970.

W. Drake Mabry has transcribed Joplin's Ragtime Dance for wind quintet. This arrangement is ideal for use in schools for young wind players at an intermediate level.

A four movement suite. The Couperin family's influence extended over five generations and was as important to French music as the Bachs' was to German music. François 1668-1733 (known as 'le Grand') was like his father organist of St. Gervais and in 1693 became organist to the King at Versailles. He excelled as a composer of keyboard music and produced an instruction book L'Art de Toucher le Clavecin which is valuable for the light it throws on contemporary practice in harpsichord playing. J. S. Bach knew and admired François Couperin's music and the two did correspond. Alas the letters disappeared when (according to an article in Grove) they were used as lidsforjampots!
