Great Flowing River. In response to the tragic and sudden death of a loved one, poet and lyricist Charles Anthony wrote the lyrics for this song dedicated to the lost family member. Tony captured the spirit of the loss as the great flowing river of love. The opening measures of music are a metaphor of a slowing and finally stopping heartbeat. The rest of the music captures the joy and love that are our memories of a life together.

I wrote Christmas Light for a choir and glockenspiel to celebrate poet Betty McKellarâ??s 90th birthday. I love the colour and imagery in Bettyâ??s work and the honesty and clarity of her writing.I first discovered her work in the 1990s and set her poem Cramasie Threid for soprano and cello.I then took the poem Sangsters as the starting point for a concerto for orchestra which was premiered by the Swedish Chamber Orchestra in 2002. I have always enjoyed collaborating with non-professional and community groups which I find stimulating and inspiring. These are musicians for whom music is an absolute pleasure â?? who give time without payment in the midst of busy lives often withdemanding jobs and family commitments. They do this because they love music and the companionship and buzz of working together. The enthusiasm always communicates to the audience and some of the most memorable performances of my music have been in churches schools and community halls. This short piece is a tribute to Bettyâ??s creativity warmth and optimism.

Paul Mealor's Behold A Tender Babe is a work for Unaccompanied SATB Choir commissioned by the Hauser-Oberschneider family to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Summer Fields School. The work sets extracts from Robert Southwell's 'In Freezing Winter Night' and lasts around 4 minutes. A review in the September 2016 issue of Organist's Review states that the 'music responds sensitively and dramatically to the lines of the lyric it chooses to set rising triumphantly at the words 'with joy approach' before gently falling away as it repeatedly insists 'behold a tender babe'.' No less difficult but also no less rewarding is PaulMealor’s Behold a tender babe written a year earlier. But it is carefully written so that the difficulties are manageable. The two places where sopranos have a top C are the only points where sopranos divide so only the first sopranos ascend there. The music follows the details of the words with drama at ‘do homage to thy King’ and then falling away most beautifully to ‘behold a babe’. - Julian Elloway

Par SAINT-SAENS CAMILLE. Psalm 137 'Super flumina Babylonis' also known as 'By the rivers of Babylon' was an inspiration for many composers including Camille Saint-Saëns. He repeatedly occupied himself with his psalm motet for solo soprano, mixed choir, saxophone quartet, string orchestra and organ, originally composed in 1854. Two of the four versions ? the first version in Latin and a much later version in English for alto solo, SATB choir and piano ? are now available for the first time in Urtext performing editions taking a meticulous account of all the sources. Saint-Saëns lived up to his reputation as an innovative composer by exploring the use of the saxophone family in sacred music just a few years after the invention of these instruments.
