Piano Trios-Les deux trios avec piano de Schubert peuvent indubitablement être comptés au nombre de ses ?uvres les meilleures. Composés tous les deux en 1827 c?est-à-dire un an avant sa mort ce sont des ?uvres caractéristiques de sa maturité riches d?une grande invention mélodique alliée à une forte puissance créatrice formelle et une profonde expressivité. Si le trio en Mi bé-mol majeur op. 100 D 929 fut vendu à l?éditeur de Leipzig Probst (il ne parut cependant que juste après la mort de Schubert) le trio en Si bémol majeur op. 99 D 898 ne fut pas imprimé du vivant du compositeur. L?adagio en Mi bémol majeur op. post. 148 D 897 reproduit en annexe et connu plus tard sous letitre de Notturno fut conçu à l?origine comme mouvement lent du trio en Si bémol majeur. Schubert pourrait l?avoir considéré comme impropre à la publication du fait de son caractère sombre et expressif jusqu?au désespoir. Il ne parut d?ailleurs qu?en 1846. En annexe de ce recueil figure également le premier essai dans le genre du trio composé par Schubert à l?été 1812 alors qu?il était âgé de 15 ans.

Hohe Stimme / High Voice-As a continuation of the new Urtext edition of the Schubert lieder Walther Dürr has now edited volume five for high medium and low voices. Volumes 1 to 4 of this edition contain mainly lieder which Schubert himself saw into print (in his own choice and order) and in the fourth volume works from the last two years of his life are included. The lieder in volume 5 onwards are strictly presented in the order of Deutsch?s Thematic Catalogue which means that in principle they are arranged chronologically.The lieder in volume five were composed in the years 1811 to 1814. The first 'Hagars Klage' (D 5) dated 30 March 1811 is also his first complete surviving song. The firsteleven lieder are evidence of his early studies (1811 1813/14). During this period Schubert immersed himself in Johann Rudolf Zumsteeg?s ballads and lieder and wrote Italian arias during his composition lessons with Antonio Salieri. He also composed a single strophic song ('Klaglied' D 23) which the only one of these songs was published shortly after his death in November 1830 as op. 131 3. His apprentice work as it were was the major ballade 'Der Taucher' (D 77) which was composed between 1813 and roughly the beginning of 1815. Probably not by chance his first complete opera ('Des Teufels Lustschloss' D 84) was written at the same time. Complementing the Impromptus and Moments musicaux, the Wiener Urtext Edition also presents a new edition of the three late piano pieces D 946. Careful study of Schubert's autographs has led to various retouchings in the musical text, in D 946/2 for instance to the supplementation of a bar. The edition offers a new approach to the issue of the second episode of D 946/1, deleted by Schubert in the autograph, but included in the posthumous first edition and meanwhile embraced in modern concert practice. The separate edition of these repertoire pieces that have enjoyed increasing popularity since the 1970s has been expanded to include the two piano piano pieces D 916B/C that have survived as fragments and have been completed by Robert D. Levin in close observance of Schubert's compositional principles. Like the three piano pieces D 946, both works originate from the context of the Impromptus and have survived in the composer's autograph sketches. Their inclusion in this volume completes the picture of Schubert's late keyboard output and provides new impulses for the pianistic concert repertoire. / Piano

Despite the pressures of his teaching position Franz Schubert created a particularly large number of works in the year 1815. Besides around 140 new Lieder he composed the second and third symphonies four stage works the first important compositions for piano the String Quartet in G minor (D 173) and two Masses: the Mass in G major (D 167) and the Mass in B-flat major the object of this edition. Considering that the Mass in F major (D 105) was written from May to July 1814 and the Mass in C major (D 452) during June and July 1816 we can see that Schubert composed four of the six complete Mass settings which have survived from his hand within the short span of twoyears.The Mass was presumably first performed in Lichtental shortly after its completion. The fact that some partly autographic parts the organ part three soprano and three alto parts were made around 1820 seems to point to a second performance. And from Schubert’s brother Ferdinand we know that the Mass was performed a third time at the parish church in Hainburg at the beginning of October 1824 since Ferdinand played the organ on that occasion. Des douze compositeurs de notre série « Au piano », Franz Schubert était sans doute le moins à l'aise au piano ? mais néanmoins quels chefs-d'?uvre il nous a laissés pour cet instrument ! Il n'est guère de pianiste qui ne soit immédiatement captivé par l'atmosphère joyeuse mais mélancolique des impromptus et des Moments musicaux de Schubert. Même les pièces simples de Schubert au début de ce volume réservent des rebondissements surprenants qui leur confèrent une profondeur qui leur est propre. Ses danses ne sont pas non plus de simples « divertissements ». Peu importe à quel point ils peuvent sembler charmants à première vue, il y a toujours un ton mélancolique dans ses valses et ses ländler. Cela semble refléter le pressentiment du compositeur gravement malade de sa propre mort.

Franz Schubert compose « l'Ave Maria » pour voix et piano en 1825. Celui-ci est publié en 1826 sous l'opus 52 n°6, en Sib Majeur. A cette époque, il voue une grande admiration à la Sainte Marie, la mère de Jésus. Il met en musique un extrait de la poésie de « Madame du lac » écrit par l'écrivain anglais Walter Scott qui a été traduit en Allemand par Adam Storck. « L'ave Maria » est appelé par Schubert son dritter Gesang « la troisième chanson d'Ellen ». L'héroïne de la poésie, Ellen Douglas, prie la vierge en se cachant. Dans une de ses correspondances avec ses parents, il avoue exprimer dans cette chanson un hymne à la Sainte Marie. Les mots d'origines de Walter Scott incluent beaucoup de référence à la prière latine de « l'Ave Maria ». Finalement, les mots latins adaptés de la prière est maintenant la version la plus généralement exécutée. L'ave Maria s'inscrit dans le répertoire marial du 19ème siècle. C-Dur-Schubert's Magnificat in C for SATB and Chamber Group.The Carus edition of the Magnificat is something of a peculiarity: It first became accessible again through a privately-owned manuscript which was long believed to have been lost. This manuscript was the basis of the old Schubert edition [1888]. Through this discovery the parts of this expressly beautiful work have now been published in the version as they were notated by Schubert in his own hand.
